It's not a mistake and the ad maker's are not stupid. It's bait and switch and it's done all the time.

Everyone knows what a Camaro and Corvette are, but maybe not a Cruze, Sonic, Impala, ect. The thing that gets me that it didn't used to be rule that every car in the line had to have the "brand" styling. If the car is good looking enough the style will stand on its own regardless of brand. Thankfully the re-imagined pony cars seem to be exempt from the "brand" front end.

No, they're definitely stupid. I've seen a dealer ad for a ZR1 with a Grand Sport Convertible pictured.

It's a brand image. Why do all BMW's have the double kidney grille and quad headlights?
Why does the Camaro not have the grille design of other Chevy cars? Imagine trying to incorprate the Malibu grille on the Camaro. It doesn't work, no matter how much you try.

Camaro and Corvette have always been unique in that way.

What's kind of cool, is that the Camaro and Corvette's designs have influenced "lesser" Chevrolets, like the 2013 Malibu.

There's one up here who owns two 4+ acre parking lots in different parts of town to store vehicles, in addition to the dealer's lot(s) in the intersection he practically owns...It's kind of neat living near the nation's #1-in-volume Chevy dealer....

If the camaro had the same front end as the other chevy's no one would have bought one.

Personally I think the whole lets make the whole line of cars look the same is a mistake.

Everyone knows people buy cars based on how they look. If someone doesn't like the look of the front end of any specific brands car, they instantly don't like the entire line up for that brand. There are multiple car brands I will never consider cuz there brand identity is ugly to me.

Just seems like too much of a risk putting all your design eggs in one basket.

If the camaro didn't exist i wouldn't be caught dead in a chevy and many other brands not worth typing there name.

Funny thing is, with all this brand unification, the average person still doesn't know what car they are looking at.

A massive lot makes it easier for customers to compare different options & packages, and if a dealer has a car in stock that matches a what a customer wants the chances of making a sale that day (or at least that week) go up substantially.

I know, I had just never seen a dealer with that many cars.

THAT is stupid.

But the ad in the OP is not stupid. They get people in and can upsell them to the higher trim. OR, sell them the lower trim.

Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Dodge, etc. etc. etc. all do the same. So if the ad in the OP didn't, there would be many less Chevy stuff getting moved.

There should be at least a small print bullet saying actual model may vary frm picture, but so be it.

Then again there are just some of those dealers who obviously mis-advertise their specials such as the Grand Sport and ZR1 switch mentioned earlier. Dealers: Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.
Why would they use an incorrect GM stock photo when they could take a picture of a correct one on their lot, unless they were intending on doing some sort of bait & switch?
