why not just use the supposedly versatile ATS platform?

Hmmmm............a Buick that I would actually be interested in test driving?! Wow! Either, I'm getting old, or GM is starting to get it!

It'd undoubtedly be cool to see, but I'm not sure how well it would sell. I remember the G8 having a similar story.

2011 Holden Commodore SSV – Click above for high-res image gallery

With General Motors' cash flow back to reasonable levels, the company is re-evaluating its position on Australian-built Zeta rockets like the Holden Commodore. The last one we had on our shores was the much-lamented Pontiac G8, which was essentially a Commodore with a new set of badges.

With the success of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, GM has reportedly okay'd the development of a new Zeta sedan for the American market. According to reports, it's slated to debut in early 2013 as a 2014 model, concurrent with the introduction of the redesigned Holden Commodore. Particular details, such as engine size, transmission options and horsepower figures are as yet unavailable. That said, a pushrod small block in the neighborhood of 430 horsepower probably isn't too far off the mark.

The rumor gets juicier, and a tad more unbelievable, with the revelation that a sport wagon and Ute version of the car are coming as well. The ute, if it happens, will debut around the same time as the sedan, with the sport wagon arriving later in 2013.
If it comes out for the 2014MY it better have a Gen V V8 or it will get spanked by the 2014 MY 470+ hp Charger that has 8spd auto/6spd manuel trans. I think Chrysler is working on puting fiat's multi-air tech on the Hemi.

Exactly! Shipping rates get cheaper with volume so it only makes good business sense.

It would be better if they just waited for the future model instead of a 2013 that looks like a dated 05 model. All its going to do is leave a bad taste in people and testers mouths. It looks really pathetic on GM's part if they just re badge another 8 year old Holden.

The 2014 MY SS sedan is based on the next gen VF commodore thats currently under developement, Not the old VE commodore that the Pontiac G8 GT was. It will wiegh lighter and have a Gen V V8.

If Alpha is supposed to be for smaller cars, it would stand to reason that large RWD sedans would need something else.
