sounds like you have an aerial drop coming off the pole to your house. this alone could very well be the problem. i've had place where the modem wouldn't train up at all, and it was due to a splice on the line running into the house so i had to hang a new drop. I guess if you called in a trouble to your phone company, and tell them your internet is down all the time, and say there's static on your phone line when it rains or it's windy. this should give the tech the idea that you need a new line ran. and yes, cable is shared with anyone who lives on the same street as you. thats why it'll slow down in the morning, lunch, supper time...when everyone else is on at the same time. GPON(Gigabyte Passive Optical Network) is what we call fiber optics. currently we're running trials to fiber buried areas, and yes, it's damn fast. up to 80Mbps.... to put that in perspective, the most common ADSL up here is 3.0 or 6.0Mbps. Although right now there's a 15 or 25Mbps option for ADSL which is just being released as well.

Well I had cable internet for about 6 yrs. (mediacom) I bought my kids computers for their bedrooms and wanted to make it easy and go wireless for them. I called Mediacom and asked for a wireless modem. They were offering it to new customers for a 1 yr. contract. They wanted me to pay 175.00 to get one. After 6 yrs. they wouldn't let me do the 1 yr contract and upgrade to wireless. So I told them to just turn my service off. AND THEY SAID OK.

This was about a year and a half ago. Well I may have to go crawling back to them. I NEVER had a prob. with cable.

Sure it may be on my end but ATT won't check it out for me without charging me.

I own a business and I understand about offering 'New Buyer' insentives. You want to bring in business. You can't exactly give all of your existing customers the introductory price. You won't last very long. But all I wanted is to pay regular price but use their services to keep me. Unbeleivable!

How many computers do you have, to have the best speed you would want a wireless Network, and this is the best router to date Link and Link

This is very good for home and business, we have about 3 computers and 4 Laptops on my where I live all networked to together

Three at home and three at the office. The office has a wireless modem but I ran ehternet hard anyway. Our clients can use their laptops this way.

At home I finally said to hell with it and ran ethernet hard up through the walls and back down and created a dataport in the walls of the kids rooms. Our main computer at home is wireless, It's an HP media center and we use a 65 inch DLP for the monitor and regular TV.

You could still run a wired network, it well be sort of faster than it is, do you have basic DSL serivce at home, see if you squeeze extra bandwidth out of them and it would be faster

But I recommend you go back to cable

It's not the speed that bothers me. Supposed to be 9mb. It's as fast as I need. No real noticable difference.

I'm going back to cable for the reliability.

Talked to the person to cancell dsl. When she asked why, I told her about the problem and she said well sir it's on your house. I said well I know that but my cable works fine. She said but if you fix the problem on your end then it will work fine. I said again, well I'm sure it would but my cable works fine and I don't have to fix anything. She said we can send a tech. out to fix it. I asked if there would be a charge. She said yes. And once again I said my cable works fine.

We went round and round and she couldn't understand. I finally said, I have jpaid my last DSL bill, so turn it off. Of course I fully expect to be billed again.

I have been a Telecomunications Specilaist, and a Cisco Certified Network Engineer.

It is indeed crappy copper local loop circuits (lines) that get "dirty", and drop the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) connection.

Phone companies suck, and getting them to replace a bad local loop cable would require weeks of escalating through the LEC (local exchange carrier), and many hours of your time.

They may move your line to a different pair in the same cable, and that may or may not work.

Another question. As I stated allready I stream music from the internet through the office and private salon rooms so there are no commercials and I can change the genre depending on who may be coming in.

I'm using Yahoo and paying for it. Is there a better place to stream music from?
pandora maybe. though most people i know use it to find new music.

If it's available. If not, hammer the phone company for static and dropping DSLAM problems.

Fiber is the best, but limited in deployment.

You may also have access to a wireless ISP (check wispdirectoy.com) and if you talk to you landlord and/or cable company you may be able to get cable at your office.
