That's because, despite what some may think, the average consumer knows a deal when he sees one. It'd be interesting to see a diesel cruze in the U.S., although I do hope that projected 34 MPG is a conservative estimate!

It doesn't help that diesel is nearly 50 cents more a gallon then gas. They better have great MPG to make it worth it.

For a lot of years, it was the stigma of being noisy and smokey.

That stigma has begun to wear off. The more recent problems have been the EPA has made diesel more expensive in the US than anywhere else in the world. (The engine option that is, though the big jump in the fuel price with ULSD hasn't helped either.)

I wish diesels were more available. Today, they have gotten to the point that they are making more power (not just more torque, but actually more horsepower) than similarly sized gas engines. VW's 2.0 diesel is slightly faster 0-60 and quarter mile than the 2.5L 5-cyl gas engine in the same cars. If only the EPA would allow them to be economical.

The 34 MPG is a combined number. The standard gasoline Cruze gets 28 MPG combined.

Plus, it's starting to sound as though the current diesel engines installed in Cruzes in Australia and Europe will not be the same engine as what will be found in the 2013 model.

If so, US engine will likely be detuned to meet emissions standards (another reason why automakers are reluctant to offer diesels)

As said already about the price of Diesel, it always seems to happen that once Diesel approaches $4+ per gal. auto manufacturers start propping their upcoming Diesel car that will give great mileage, etc. etc.

Volkswagen's new (re-vamped to meet 50-state emissions) TDI was the same thing a couple years back when Diesel hit $5gal. Once it gets that high, any savings over gasoline go right out the window. The problem is, the EPA saw demand for small-engine Diesels in the U.S. rising and knew what to do to keep cost-effectiveness away from consumers. *cough* Ultra-low sulphur *cough*
