The concept of VVT dates back to steam engines, was used in aircraft in the 1920's and its been in cars for about 30 years. Honda's v-tech is a lot like Ford's Ecoboost in so much as they both have a catchy name and people forget that other manufacturers did the same thing earlier.

On a barely related tech-fascination/history note ... I find it funny when people talk about OHV engines as being old, implying that OHC is somehow new. They're both roughly a century old, with OHV being maybe a decade older than OHC.

I tried finding an LS3 one. There are none.

Just an illustration on how it all works.

The one illustration I think is a Honda. lol VVT.

WTF did you just post? LOL!!! Yeah - well - I'm a dodecahedron (HTF is that spelled?...)

Is that why, until the last RX8, those engines were considered too inefficient, then, because they are really almost three-cylinder engines per rotor? Sh*t - here comes that headache again

I really think these are great animations. I couldn't wrap my mind around how a rotary works, and I'm closer than I have ever been now, so thanks

Rotors make my head spin, so I can't even begin to explain. I think its related to the valving, or maybe how the compression stroke works, or it could be something else entirely. But suffice to say, its more complicated than how a 3 sided rotor does 4 things at once.

Sh*t - here comes that headache again No, they are not thermally efficient which is what hurts the fuel mileage. This means they tend to lose thermal expansion during the power stroke and is why there are 2 plugs per chamber (to ignite the mix about 20 degrees apart). Everyone tried to label them 6-cyl's to make them race in higher HP classes cuz they were kicking everyone's ass elsewhere... When that failed, they handicapped them with more and more weight til they couldn't compete...
