Thumbs up

newegg is FINE i guess but this is what i paid for my parts from a link from the www.pricewatch.com site

gigabyte motherboard with AMD 64 'dual core' 2.0 ghz cpu and cooling fain: $115 shipped
2 sticks of 2 gig 800 mhz memory for 17.99 x 2 with free shipping
500w power supply 32 bucks at a local PC parts store
mid ATX tower case (black with front audio/usb) 45 bucks at local pc parts store

227 and change total

since i kept things like my DVD burner and 2 HD drives and floppy drive kept the cost way down.

Forgive me, this is off-topic - but how many engineering/geek peeps here used to blow capacitors just to hear them "POP" and see the smoke trail?!?!?

I can tell you "Black Cats" Ain't got nuthin on a "Fat Cap" that's been overloaded -- on purpose ----

That's a fun way to break the boredom of building boards and stuffing components before they hit the wave-solder machine. Good times. Brings me back.

PS- sorry to hear your old gear gave up the ghost, but it sounds like you got the new stuff taken care of.

Cheers.

macs are computers for people who hate computers (or can't use them properly)

p.s. i've had a lot of experience with macs, i worked for the school board in high school servicing, troubleshooting, security, etc. so i'm no windows fanboy. i'm not that fond of windows actually and mac does what it does well, but it's like this, you can have a Lexus that can park itself or

Thirded and QFT. I also second Tigerdirect. If I wasn't so satsified with my HP laptop, I'd have built my own as well. Would have been a wash more or less, but when you can swap drives with a PS3..

Yeah, I was sold. Only qualm is LOLNOITDOESNTPLAYCRYSIS..

Pity they don't make vid cards as easy to swap in laptops as they do in PCs. But I do have an idle desktop back home.. might do a gutting with that hulk. *shrug*

The only reason I do not have a Mac is because of my review site. We are heavily PC based and PC Gaming based.

Black Mongoose my computer that I upgraded for my birthday which was before we found out Stephanie was sick is the following.

i7 940 overclocked to 3.3GHz
6 GB Corsair DDR3
Asus Rampage II X58 Chipset
NIVIDA GTX295 Reference Board from NVIDIA
300GB WD Raptor HD
2x 1GB Seagate 1TB HD
Creative Fatality PCI-E X-FI
Dell 2708 27" LCD
Vista 64 Ultimate

This except the video card will last me about 16 months before I have to upgrade again to have a good review machine.

OUCH, only 2GB that is not good for an X58. That is a tri-channel chipset. You need to get the memory upgrade sooner than latter.
