This is small minded thinking and it's going to bite you in the ass just like it did during the great depression. Short term gain for long term pain. Ironically, GM is one of those companies who is going to get hit the hardest. No Chinese products into the US? No problem - take your Buicks out of China.

Wow some people really like to try and connect the dots and just keep going. I for one would like to try and keep the money that the money that the US government is spending in this country.
To put it another way, it would be like the government saying we are going to help GM by buying 50,000 cars. Would it make more sense to buy 50,000 Cobalt's or 50,000 Aveo's? Even though Aveo's are cheaper wouldn't the Cobalt's make more sense?

To expand on that thought, how about those damn bankers lending out all of that taxpayers money out to the taxpayer so that they can get the economy moving by spending instead of these assholes taking in 18 billion in bonuses last year? That would be a good start right there!

I will definitely agree with that. If I have to hear one more time that they need to give bonuses to retain talent I am going to scream. When you start losing billions that is not the talent you want to retain. I thought the point of the bonus structure was that if you had a good year then you would be able to make tons of money but in a bad year you would not be so lucky.

I agree with the principal of this plan completely.

Sure there is. Our steel mills don't provide jobs to Americans. We provide material cheaper than you can supply it yourself. Take price out of the equation (within reason) and it makes more sense for you to buy American than Canadian. And if you stop buying our steel, no biggie. We won't buy certain things from you, and increase the price of other exports like electricity and natural gas. Stuff like that is hard to find other sources for. Actually, I just want an excuse to start tearing NAFTA apart. I'm content with 1 page at a time.

Meh, it would never come to that. The provisions state that increased cost or depleted supply would allow for outside sources to be used.

Why do you agree with this plan completely? Strange that this point of view would come from a Canadian.

Tearing up NAFTA will do nothing for either country. We are losing the jobs to China and India, not each other.

Wow, just wow. I could say something, but it would probably end up being edited or draw the ire of some members here.

There may be a very real possibility that the Union may not last another 15-20 years under this sort of situation.. and I'm ready to protect my interests by any means necessary.

I agree that projects designed to create jobs should be done with material that also creates/keeps jobs. That is the principal. In practice, yeah it might hurt Hamilton a bit but I doubt that it will be as bad as some expect. If there is a spike in steel demand in the US, their mills won't be able to match so prices will go up, thus both requirements will be met. Then they'll likely come to us to make up the shortfall. Chinese and Indian steel is still garbage. No quality control. One batch might be good but the next isn't, but this rarely gets checked. This is important because the quality of the steel is also mentioned. And again, we have plenty of other resources that they are dependent upon.

As NAFTA vs China/India for job losses, well I won't go into an off topic discussion.
