I only asked them tocheck the light. I didn't tell them to fix the problem. I made it clear that the cel was on for months too.

THEN, they tell me I need to have the upper and lower ball joints replaced. Lowers are on them, recall item. Uppers are on me. They were about to begin the work.

I stopped them. I'll do it myself. The uppers are one part. The entire control arm. Sucks but easy to replace. Just cost more.

Here's where I get really irritated. They want 319.00 per control arm. I priced them aftermarket. 150.00 all day long. I can buy both for less than they want for one. I can even go really cheap and get them for 80.00 a piece.

Mark Dodge in Mobile Alabama is where I went.
$700 for a fuel rail on a 91 new yorker. Doesn't even come with the pressure regulator. To get the parts to fix the drivers side window cable they wanted $1100 and they didn't even have the parts..

No wonder they went out of business.

That's the first thing I learned in shop class and I've had to use it a few time's like when I took my red 67 Camaro to a detailer and he tried to charge me an extra $150 for "extra buffing" I said "I didn't authorize that besides I only have the amount I signed for anyways" and showed him the cash and he grabbed it and tossed me my keys.
They had already done the work. They charge for a test. I couldn't justify stealing my money back. I'm not saying they owe me anything. I'm saying they are a shotty POC organization. I'll never go back, and I'll advise anyone else not to as well.

They have the forum broken down to the different models,if you have the code of the computer/jeep.

Nine out of ten those guys know what the code means or can give you an idea, that you can try to figure out what the problem is.

Cheaper in the long run....................
If I'd known the code, I could have googled and seen the 'Emissions' name in it and just got a gas cap. Then, if the light is still on there a week later, go in and have them check. I still say it's crappy they charge for that. I just needed to know the code.

Every dealership I have ever dealt with has been overpriced regardless of the make, just the way it is. Besides if you want to pay dealership prices you can usually end up getting a better upgraded part for the same or less than what they charge, ie the Moog ball joints instead of the crappy stocker.
I bought Moog control arms last night. The ball joints don't come out. Gotta buy the whole arm. Same with the fuel filter in it. Gotta buy the whole damn thing. It's a crock.

Hmmmm.......... I just never paid only half. It's always been more like 80%.

Chrysler is ridiculous. I'm still trying to get my parents to get rid of their Durango for a Tahoe.

Yeah, I am lucky, they want to replace the whole thing on the Patriot too, but Moog started offering replacement push in balljoints. Moog is a superior product anyways lol.

Correction Chrysler dealer service is ridiculous, at least it was, they are working on it now, or supposed to be. I got pretty infuriated at the dealer where i got my Jeep (also a Ford dealer). I got so ticked off after 2 oil changes (one appt i made a week+ in advance and get there and they say we don't have you down for an appt, mind you this was over an hour drive for me. After that I had my oil changes done elsewhere. BUT that was 2.5 years ago and improving dealer service is one of their priorities.

As far as direct replacement parts, they are the best IMHO. When I had my Caprice they were the ones everyone suggested for the suspension parts that tended to fail. Yes, i had to replace a bll joint and control arm (I believe), but it was because I took into a loval shop to have it alligned. Well, when i come to pick it up the say I have a bad joint and they wanted to replace it, I said no. When I drove the car it was extremely obvious they had tampered with it as when i took it in it was very tight and when i pulled out it was sloppy. I took it to my mechanic to check it out and he said the suspension parts had been physically loosened. Anywho that was my first experince with Moog parts lol. Sorry about going off on a tangent, but it made me remember that story and maybe make you feel better they didn't try to kill you lol.

How and why are parts for the car companies so much more expensive and yet the cheaper aftermarket parts are so much better?

The aftermarket has the advantage of seeing how the OEM parts are failing and redesign the failing component. The biggest reason aftermarket parts are cheaper is the supply chain to the retailer. Factory parts usually have two extra steps to get to the dealer, and every time the part is handled it doubles in price.

I wouldn't blame chrysler because you had a bad experience at one dealership. I've owned many jeeps and still own one. I've found my local chrysler dealer to be very fair on replacement parts. Also remember not all parts are created equal.

My jeep dealer here has a special every friday for oil changes. It only cost 9.95 + tax for an oil and filter change.

Perhaps you are right.

I just know I've never seen parts quite that high. NOt double. Typicaly I've always noticed parts about 20% cheaper. This was a shocker.

And My Chevy dealer, Lexus, and the Suzuki dealer we used to go to would check and test at no charge.

Guess I just went to a really shity dealer.

I gotta replace ALL my ball joints. I know this becuase they made me sign a waiver saying I understood the vehicle was unsafe to drive. You know how many little old women would have freaked out and had the work done immediately?

At the same time, there have probably been some really stupid lawsuits regarding NOT notifying a customer of a potential hazard such as that.
