It works for the camaro, mustang, and challenger. I just searched the internet for some picture of cars that it might work, and scrapped the idea after looking at the pictures. I don't think it would work for too many more cars.

The SSR didn't do much for me, but it was one of the vehicles I planned to look at the day I bought my RS. Never got that far. However I have owned 2 el Camino's - they are my favorite Chevy by far and I am holding my breath that GM will bring them back (with heated steering wheels ).
The problem with the SSR is that GM was trying to make a knock-off on the Mopar retro products. Try it with a Camaro front clip instead. Then it would be bigger than that south American job so us north Americans would buy it.
I saw a 59 or 60 model el Camino just the other day, beautiful shape, nice paint, and a full load of lumber in the back. I drive a 2010 Camaro, and I was envious.
I am on board with bringing el Camino back and calling it el Camino. It was a popular product and could be again. If they were done right I'd trade the Camaro in on one!

You guys could be right about the Montana being just too small. And I know the SSR was not enough of a truck to satisfy the needs of those who needed a part time truck car for around town use like the ElCamino. That nitch was filled partly by the Colorado/Canyon line in 2004. Now GM has announced that it will discontinue those trucks in 2012 with no replacment scheduled.

I bought one of the first 2004 Colorados to hit town. It was a crew cab and we love it still. It now have over 95,000 miles on it. I DON'T need or want a full size pickup. I DO need a pickup bed once in a while to haul stuff though. The Colorado was perfect. It gets good mileage, rides a lot quieter than my 2011 Camaro (sorry guys but it's true), takes 4 people in comfort anywhere I want to go, and I can tow it behind my motorhome. As of today Chevy is telling this part of their customer base to take a hike over to Toyota or Nissan if they want a product that fits this demographic. They are missing the mark. An ElCamino-like vehicle might capture us. The Montana might too. Come on Chevy!!! Don't drop this customer base from your loyal following.

HHR sales by year:
2005 41,011
2006 101,298
2007 105,175
2008 96,053
2009 70,842

Those are pretty good sales figures for a failure.

Chevy has a really cool successor to the Colorado called the Montana. It's sort of like the ElCamino. But according to all accounts, though the are making it ans selling in South America, there is no intention to ever bring it to the USA. WHY?

I saw the price of a SSR and I was like WHAT?! I think I even clutched my heart. I am trying to recall....

Me Too!!!

That's why one never made it into my garage. Had it been reasonably priced I would have had the SSR rather than the Colorado I did get. But at $20K more, NO WAY!

SSR - Yes, failed due to being way over priced.

HHR - NOT A FAILURE! There are tons of them on the road. They are a great little vehicle, especially for work. I drive one on the Job all the time and I love it.

Taking in total sales, I don't know how you can consider the HHR a failure. If you've actually driven one, you'd know that they are very nice little cars. Much better than the PT. I just wish the HHR was actually being replaced with something. It's a shame.

The Holden Ute has better chances of making it stateside.
Not to mention that is one ugly baby........

Well at one time they had planned to bring the 'ute here as a Pontiac G8, but then the economy tanked and it got cancelled. And of course Pontiac ended up getting "cancelled.":(

I've got an idea. How about designing and manufacturing quality, innovative, forward thinking vehicles which would actually impress people and make them happy to own them? Seems to work at Cadillac right now! Just a silly idea of mine.
