I used to have a Zen:Vision 30GB....bought it with a waranty for $400, and the damn thing got Stolen within 2 months.
I bought it because a comparable Ipod was more expensive (by almost $200 ), and didn't have as many features. But 50% of the reason though was because I hate itunes and everything that goes along with it.I haven't bought an mp3 player in over two years since I lost that one. Sort of a self-inflicted punishment for not protecting it better ...but now, with my new phone, I'll slap a 8GB sd card in there and vuala. But I'll probably never get an Ipod...they're overrated by a fair amount, imo.

One step in a LONG road to getting me as a customer... But not enough for me to jump on board.
The first step apple took towards getting me as a customer was the itouch/iphone. Good tool.. Problem is its locked down harder than a serial killer on death row. Apple needs to seriously recognize that they will never get the entire market by locking out tech savvy people, the market share that will grow exponentially due to older generations dying off.

The change is NOT retroactive, but you can pay I believe $.30 a song to remove the DRM and get a 256kbps song instead of a 128kbps song.
The files are still AAC, but could be fairly easily converted now that DRM is gone, and there is no need for a firmware update for this. It simply means when you purchase a song there will no longer be burn limits, computer limits, etc. And it's not so much Apple as it is the record companies. All EMI music was available a year ago without DRM, and Apple's reasoning for keeping Fairplay away from others was pretty simple: Apple had to guard the hell out of it, or they could risk losing the license to sell music. |
