I can't even watch the news, I hope the media handles this well..... They need to shut up and get out of town, let them mourn. :(

100% agreed. But it won't happen. For the media this is a huge payday ... lotsa money to be made. They will ride out the public outrage as much as possible and foster it. As a Va Tech alum, the stupidity of the media regarding that event and the knee jerk reactions were predictable but annoying nonetheless.

I plan to avoid the coverage as much as possible. Anger at the perpetrator does me no good. There is noone else to hold responsible for this. the only thing is to step back and let the healing begin and to be supportive to those that reach out for help.

As for me, I plan to try to do other things with my evening and then to go enjoy a cruise in the morning (hopefully top down between rain bouts)!

It's just so tragic we really need to spend more money in this country to identify and help mentally ill people to stop things like this from happening. Too many are just sent away without the proper help to just take pills to try and stay stable.

Here here! Mandatory treatment underwhich some prepetrators or seriously mentally unstable/dangerous individualy are released is a total joke and is rarely ever enforced at least in areas I am aware of. Far too many unstable folks are allowed to roam our streets untreated because they have the "right" to choose whether or not to be treated, yet we apparently do not have the right to be safe in our own communities because of their "rights". The same for dangerous criminals who are either found "innocent" due to legal tecnicalities regarding their rights regardless of the rights of the larger community, or who get a slap on the wrist sentence or are released early due to "good behavior" or prison overcrowding. This also includes perpetrators of child abuse and domestic violence who are some of the most dangerous folks among us. I know this is getting rather political but moderators, please in light of the situation, be a bit tollerant. We finally need to get a clue and build sufficient prisons and psychiatric hospitals to house dangerous individuals for the safety of our society and then change/enforce laws to keep them there. Then provide mental health treatment and enforce mandatory treatment programs for those who can be safely maintained in the community with treatment. As a mental health therapist for the past nearly 30 years I see daily how unsafe we all are daily and are totaly obvlious to it. It is actually a miracle there are not more such tragedies. Okay. Rant over. We now return to our regularly scheduled programing.

Good morning crew. HAGD

Before anyone says we should be more like Japan, look at the freedoms they lose..... Our forefathers that fought and died for our freedoms would roll over in their graves.

Gun control debates are probably likely, just be careful what you wish for.

There have been a few high profile cases in recent years here, where people have been released from Western State Hospital (the state facility for criminally insane) early - whether for overcrowding or good behavior, or whatever... - and then have gone out and killed people.
The real tragedy is that there isn't enough money to prevent these things from happening. Maybe if a politician's family member is one of the mentally ill, or a victim, then things might change.

I'm curious to hear the young man's history... typical fashion, most of media's facts yesterday are wrong today.

Possibly the mother wasn't a teacher at the school

Normally, stress sends me running to comfort food. Lately, though, it's just the opposite. I've gone from a size 10 (in September) to a 4 as of today.... No complaining, since all my really cute clothes fit again, but this is just really weird.
