Gaming PC

I was thinking about getting the z170 mobo, but heard the performance difference with the i7 4790k and the new i7 equivalent wasn't any different currently.

I purchased an Alienware X51 with Core 5 Fourth Gen, 8 GB RAM and 2 GB Nvidia Geforce. I'm running Windows 7 (64 Bit) OS and it handles all the current PC games to date. I'm surprised as the X51 turned 2 years old last month. I bought it on a Black Friday deal and have been happy with it ever since.

You're not wrong. If you're still running (or planning to run) a Haswell K processor and it'll do the job, Skylake just isn't worth the money unless there's a really good reason. My reasoning was split between future compatibility for them as it's thier first build and also Skylake's ability to scale with DDR4 memory speeds and ability to overclock without buying an unlocked processor.

They've been blazing away at Skyrim and Black Ops III all day today and it looks good and framerates are high. Some of the saving grace right now is that they're not doing it in 1080 (1280x768 720p using thier LED TV's as monitors). Reviews and tests look good for the i3 at 1080 but I suspect that in a couple of years games will need a solid four cores instead of hyperthreading and the 380 won't be quite enough but that's plenty of time for them to save and pick up a new CPU, GPU, and PSU to make them like new. In the meantime, I'm going to teach them a little about overclocking and see what the i3-6100 can do at 4.5GHz or so vice the stock 3.7GHz.

I'd be really interested to see your results on the skylake i3. I am still riding my haswell box: 4770k@ 4.4ghz, gtx 770 SC in sli, 16gb of vengeance ram, samsung 850 pro 256gb, h100i, corsair 600t in arctic white. Running Win10 Pro and loving it. Housemate just built a skylake machine and I was almost tempted, DDR4 is the temptation really as the chip isnt that much better vs haswell. I am trying to wait on the next nvidia gpu though @_@

Well, looks like i'll be able to get the rest of my build this weekend and get it all up and running. I'm still torn between haswell and skylake. I agree with you, that the skylake would be better for future upgrades, but i'm hoping the mobo and i7 4790k will do me good for at least 5 years, and still play any game I want, without issue. then I can revisit a new mobo and cpu at that time, if needed. It's basically the expense of skylake and memory that's holding me back. I'm afraid of going with an i5 because I don't know if that would be good enough for gaming, streaming on twitch, and playing music all at the same time.

My beast seems to be running strong after 3 years...though some of my SSD's are getting a little full (3 1TB SSD's, 1 3GB drive as well). Doing a lot of video editing and that eats up space.

So, I went and got a Drobo. Now I have 15 TB of drive space which I can increase by replacing with bigger drives if I ever need (5 4TB drives in it). Great for backing up lots of older video files.

I still want to get a few more fans with blue LED's, and i'm looking at cpu coolers. I'm wondering if a corsair h50 water cooler would be better than something like this:

I've been kicking around building or buying something to run Arma 3 on mid settings smoothly. Any suggestions? Was thinking of going cheap-college + restoring a car + other things has me on a tight budget.
Should specify,
was thinking last gen i5, decent graphics card, etc

ArmA is more heavily based around CPU power, personally i'd save up a bit more and go with an i7. Of course a beefy GPU will help, but you'd benefit from the hyperthreading (and overclocking if you go with a "K" variant).
