So I just took my CHL and am anxiously awaiting the arrival, so now of course I'm looking for a new carry toy. I have it down to the Kimber Crimson Carry and the H&K USP Compact 40. I've read alot of conflicting info about having a .40 and .45 w/ anything shorter than a 4" barrel. Anyone got any info or suggestions?

A small .40 that is light weight (like mine above) will kick like a mule.... A .45 same size and weight would kick a little less, due to the fact that it is a larger bullet moving at a slower speed. However, if this gun is ment to stop someone (seeing as it is for CHL) then you would want as much power behind it as possible. You should only really have to feel the kick once, maybe twice...

My fiance just got a Kimber Ultra Raptor for his carry, he loves it! Said the kick is a bit worse than my .40mm sub M&P, but it's more accurate.

.40 S&Ws have a bit more bit in their recoil compared to some larger caliber guns due to the nature of their loading. They are essentially a tamed down 10mm, they are a .40 cal slug moving 1100fps. They tend to be "snappy", shorty barrels, lighter guns, makes this worse.

Another downside to .40 S&W is that it isn't nowhere near as accurate as the 9mm or .45 ACP. It has to do with it's ballistics. While it is plenty duty accurate, you won't see many, if any, .40 S&W on a sharpshooters list.

The .45 ACP on the other hand is a very accurate round, and is easy to control. Although a huge slug, ranging from 180g to 230 or more, it's not moving as fast. It still has awesome muzzle energy, right in line with the .40s, with less speed, and in most cases, less "snappy" recoil. Typically, the .45 is a bit heavier gun, and thus recoil is a bit less observed.

Either is a good carry round, and will do what a person needs to do. Personally, I'd rather a good .45 then a .40, but I won't kick the .40 out of bed for eating crackers neither, lol.

Amen to that It is our Soliders that protect the freedom to be able to arm ourself!!

BTW... I think it is absurd that we as a nation can trust someone enough w/ weapons on foreign land and they can not protect them self on their own base...
