No need to buy books bro. Just watch some YouTube vids. There are several professionals who do some good vids. Also there will be a few tools you will need if you build your own.

I recommend spikes tactical if you want to build your own. They are very helpful, good prices, and quality products. Here is one that I built from them.

The hardest part about building a AR from the ground up is the barrel and head spacing. If you don't know what you are doing you can royally screw up the upper and the barrel which is one big, expansive oops. I highly recommend you have someone teach you hands on how to do this and don't rely on videos.

I was going to go this route until I started pricing the tools and parts required to completely build a AR from scratch and the bill was going to run about the same price as the AR itself. I would only suggest this if you plan on doing a few rifles or have some friends that want ARs as well so you can spread out the initial cost.

Also, if you build your own AR, all troubleshooting will rely on you. If you are new to the AR world and know very little about them, you may never get the gun operating correctly unless you're lucky.

For a first time user who wants to build one, I suggest you go to a gun show or a gun shop and buy the following;
- a complete upper assembly
- a stripped lower assembly (don't worry about brands or prices. Buy the cheapest you can find. There are only 4 companies that manufacturer lower assemblies and they all are identical)
- a quality lower parts kit
- a butt stock (be sure to note if it is a rifle length or a collapsible stock, aka carbine. Also note if its mil spec or commercial spec. This decision will determine the last three parts you need.)
- a buffer tube (make sure the specs matches the stock as there are 4 different types out there, one for each choice of stock.)
- a buffer spring (again make sure it matches the stock, either a rifle length or carbine length)
- a buffer (again either rifle or carbine)

If you are using new parts and are doing a home defense or plinking/training rifle, you do not need to check headspacing on an AR15. If doing an accuracy (e.g. benchrest shooting) build, then do it. If you are concerned, however, a go/no go gauge in 5.56 is around $30. I have built a few and never checked it once and all of them ran like a top. Go to AR15.com and look around. There is a how to section under the main AR15 section. That is where I learned. Wal Marts around here sell the Colt 6920 for a little over $1k. Yes, you can build cheaper than that but guns are like cars-some people just want to have it built vs building it themselves. My duty rifle was a home build and I have the utmost faith in it. Not a single malfunction to date and lots of rounds.
Rule of thumb for headspacing
New parts (barrel and bolt): No.
Old bolt + New Barrel: Yes.
New bolt + old barrel: No.

Wow way to scare people off. I do not believe you are correct at all. Ar vice block 20$ ar barrel wrench 25$. Torque wrench on hand or 25. And 10$ for punches. That's around 60$ or 85$

Also head spacing is almost a non issue now, I did not say it was not an issue, but however go to any shop and they will do it for you.

I completed mine for 750 tools included

Should probably try this in the right section. There's a firearms section in off-topic. Would probably get more info that way.
