GM is not going to send out black Suburbans to take people off the streets for saying "Chevy." I don't understand why any of you care. Chevrolet is the name of the brand. Enthusiasts have a tendency to use the abbreviation colloquially. From now forward, GM will advertise the full name of the brand, as it has done for generations. Keep calling it a Chevy. People always will.

Seriously, who cares. So people will be hearing an extra syllable in advertising now, oh no.

I can't believe how many people are getting their tighty whiteys in a bunch over this. It affects us in no way whatsoever.

from a psychological aspect, this thread is interesting as to see so many people upset over what appears to be something simple.... some almost virile. On a positive note, this should be a good sign to GM that a lot of people care this much.

For those that are saying that Chevy=Chevrolet is ingrained into the minds of the US buyer: that has absolutely nothing at all to do with this in any way. This came about because of potential confusion in emerging markets, not established ones like North America. I doubt that the Indians make the same connection between Chevy and Chevrolet that we do.

Correct, since that isn't the point. In GM's own words:
Quote:
DETROIT -- Today’s emotional debate over a poorly worded memo on our use of the Chevrolet brand is a good reminder of how passionately people feel about Chevrolet. It is a passion we share and one we do not take for granted.

We love Chevy. In no way are we discouraging customers or fans from using the name. We deeply appreciate the emotional connections that millions of people have for Chevrolet and its products.

In global markets, we are establishing a significant presence for Chevrolet, and need to move toward a consistent brand name for advertising and marketing purposes. The memo in question was one step in that process.

We hope people around the world will continue to fall in love with Chevrolets and smile when they call their favorite car, truck or crossover “Chevy.”
Now, it looks to me like their intention is to NOT discourage customers or fans (ie, you and me) from using Chevy. I would have to assume that includes looking for cars on chevy.com, since visiting a product website like that would be usage of the term by customers or fans. But all of GM's info about the Chevrolet brand isn't on chevy.com, all that site does is redirect you to chevrolet.com. Seems to be perfectly in line with what they are trying to do.

Well, unless we happen to work for GM. Then we'd have to add one syllable when talking about the brand.

Hey GM, how about using all that money, time, and effort to make some cool Chevy commercials, ala mustang and challenger? instead of wasting time on these shinanigans.

I think a memo costs a bit less (in time and money) than a commercial

Well, there is the cost of paying the person for about 2 minutes, plus the electricity to keep the computer on, the wear on the computer ... add it all up and it might have cost them $10.

An email costs nothing to send.
An email takes maybe 5 minutes to type, depending on how fast you type.
An email takes barely any effort to type.
