I was just sitting here thinking, I don't think we have ever discussed gear. So, tell us what you are shooting with, how long you have had it, likes and dislikes....

photo (1) by Okie Photo, on Flickr

Body:
Nikon D7000
Lenses:
Tameron 28-75mm f/2.8 (This is my main lens, it rarely leaves the body)
Nikon 55-300mm (for the LONG stuff)
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 (love my nifty fifty)
Flash units:
(2) Nikon SB-700 speedlights (LOVE)
Misc.:
A nice assortment of filters
Nikon wireless shutter release trigger
(1) light stand with flash head adapter, with umbrella (used mostly for my on location stuff with vehicles)

Lets see, the D7000....AWESOME for the money. It is feature rich, and even has a lot of features that the pro bodies have. Does very well in low light, and has "acceptable" noise up to around ISO 1600

The Tamron lens has been my best investment. Super fast, super sharp, very nice range, and about half of a 2.8 Nikon equivalent!!

Have any questions just let me know!

Oh ya, we can throw in "next on the block" as well!! For me, the next purchase will be a super wide angle from tamron, not a fish-eye, but a true wide angle. 10-17mm to be exact.

Question::::

I invested quite a bit of money in the "Old-fashioned" photography, but since going Digital, I have only had nice Minolta and such cameras. If I were going to invest in a good quality "serious" camera, what would you recommend and what is the dent in the wallet I am looking at?

Check out this site and pay close attention to the image cross comparisons and decide which DSLR works best for what you want to do.

My first foray into the digital realm was a Nikon D100. Once Canon came out with the 5D, I sold all my Nikon equipment and went all in on Canon (now have both the 5D and 5D MK 2).

It all depends on how "serious" you are talking about. My wife shoots with a Nikon D5100 (she is my second shooter at weddings), that will set you back around $850. My 7000, which will do anything any hobbyist will ever want to do will set you back $1800. Then of course there are the pro bodies which range anywhere from $2000 - $7000.

I regret that I went entry level. Although I still have so much to learn and lot's of practice needed, I can see that soon my Nikon D40 is not going to be enough for me. At least if I stay with Nikon I won't have to buy new lenses when I upgrade.

You may pick up the basics in a class, but real world application will throw a whole new mess at you! Keep at it!!
Awesome thanks for the advice!

"Others, like Cannon, force customers to buy entirely new lenses to fit their latest cameras' lens mounts."

Where the heck did you hear that? Canon only has 3 different lens mounts. The old F mounts that they used up until 1987 when they started their EF mounts (basically the start of their autofocus lenses). And then the very recent EFs lenses. Built as lower cost lenses using smaller glass elements for use on the current line of digital SLRs (most of which use a sensor much smaller than 35mm). All of their digital SLRs can still use the EF lenses. While these won't work on their film cameras and full frame digital SLRs each one is easily matched by one of the other lenses they offer.

All of my cameras can use every one of these lenses:

And Canon glass is among the best in the word.
