When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students responded with a unanimous 'yes....'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car..

The sand is everything else---the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children..

Spend time with your parents.

Visit with grandparents.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

Play another 18.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.

Set your priorities.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Please share this with someone you care about. I JUST DID!

This couldn't have been posted at a better time... My mother-in-law has been battling breast cancer, and today she made the decision to stop chemo and radiation. The doctors have told her she has about 3 months...:( She's the kind of lady who really embraces life and loves with all she has. She's responsible for bringing my husband and his dad back together after they hadn't spoken in nearly 20 years - now, they talk daily, and my stepson has had the opportunity to get to know his grandparents...
She's always focused on the really important things, but always left room for those beers (or, in her case, a bottle of wine shared with those she loves....)
Thanks for posting this. It really makes me realize even more what is important...

... I don't know what to say... but, I'm glad it helps :(

As we get older we lose our friends, family, loved ones on a MUCH more regular basis... a road we'll take ourselves one day. In the meantime we should try to live our lives like your mother-in-law... with love for one another... even when the "other" may not like us so much.

So sorry to hear this. You've already had your share. Like I said before, I wish I could carry this burden for you. Enjoy her life with her while she's still with you. The memories will be priceless.

I know this is a rough time for your family. I went through some pretty rough times last year which made me realize how short life is. I'm trying to knock some things off my bucket list and enjoy myself a little more. I decided I needed a better sense of humor.

Take time to stop and smell the roses...and never can tell, your mother in law may mentally heal herself or give herself more time if she's not so stressed about treatment. Thoughts and prayers coming your way!

Praying for your mother in law, you and your family. My father in law was told they suspected he had lung cancer about this time last year. He was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in October. After several months of testing and waiting he started treatment in Nov. He was prayed over and we believed for a complete recovery. He did the limited treatment allowed due to a heart condition. He went Tuesday for a follow up and the xrays look good and the doctor just shakes her head she can't believe it. Don't lose faith and stay strong! From all this we did learn life is short and we must enjoy it and thankful for every day.

LBM, I'm sorry to hear that. I've had two aunts pass away from breast cancer, but also had three friends who have survived it. My prayers are with you and your family for your mother-in-law.

Indeed, we need to keep sight of what's really important! For me, other people are at the top of that list, followed by beautiful things like our Camaros.
