It's more like square vs rectangle: a square is a specific type of rectangle, but a rectangle is not always a square. A stall converter is a specific subset of torque converters, but not all torque converters can be classified as stall converter.

Eh, I think you guys are complicating things, when it doesn't need to be. You have a stock torque converter. You can buy "performance" torque converters. Or replace "torque" with "stall".
