That's some good news ! I'm just dying with anticipation for the final numbers, this truck is a big win for GM.

All the reviews hitting the web on the Duramax look great. I haven't seen a single one that had anything negative to say. Most are getting low 30s MPG with mixed use and one said he hit 38mpg on the highway.

If the increase the payload/tow capacity in a few years, I'll be all over one of these for my next truck.

Really? a 7,000 pound towing capacity out of a mid-size truck isn't enough?

I'm pretty sure you need a full-size truck if you need more towing capacity than that...

Yeah no kidding....not to mention it's 7700lb 2wd (7600lb 4wd) with the Duramax option.

It won't tow a gen5 Camaro in an enclosed trailer though.

But you can't get the Duramax in the Silverado 1500 and getting one of the HDs is a bit of overkill for my needs. Having a mid-size that can safely tow 9000 lbs and get 30+ MPG on the highway would be great. Not going to happen anytime soon, but I probably won't get a new truck for another 5-6 yrs anyway.

I mean, don't get me wrong, that much towing capacity in a mid-size would be pretty freaking awesome, but I think that's asking a *LOT* of a mid-size truck frame...

Even if they did put the small Duramax into the 1500 it wouldn't be able to tow 9k lbs anyway. The Ram Ecodiesel can just manage a 9000ish lb tow rating, in certain configurations, with a much more powerful V6. But really, if you want to tow 9k lbs you'd probably want something rated at 10 or 11 thousand pounds, as a safety margin (unless you've factored that in already). That tends to be where 1/2 ton V8s (or the 3.5L Ecoboast) with tow packages seem to play these days.

You're right that it won't be happening any time soon. Certainly not in the next generation (ie, the trucks of 5-6 years from now), thats for sure.

Yeah, but 5-6 years ago we would have thought 7000+ lbs towing capacity was a LOT, too.

I think the engine can actually handle it, but the 1590 lbs payload (and brakes) is(are) what is limiting the towing capacity. And yes, I'm thinking I need 7000 lbs towing so the 9000 to get me the safety margin. I've got the Ecoboost now and it does great, but I don't need 11,300 lbs towing capacity and would gladly trade some for 30 mpg hwy.

Nissan Titan's upcoming diesel will do that but you'll be in the mid to high 20's most likely on mileage.

It all depends on how much towing you'll do. I'd rather have 90% efficiency for 10% towing with a bit of wheezing than additional towing capacity I'd rarely use and 7mpg less ALL the time to get 1mpg higher the rare times I tow.

Never thought I'd be interested in another chevy but the diesel has me very interested.
