BCAA are Branch chain amino acids. Your protein shakes contain all 20 of the essential amino acids. It pretty much compromises of Leucine Isoleucine and Valine which are the precursors to every other BCAA in the human body. Muscles are formed from proteins so by supplementing with amino's it helps keep your body in a positive nitrogen balance and anabolic.

Welcome. Funny thing is the op never comes here lol I know what you're going through. I am also divorced with 50/50 custody of my son who lives with me. I started my fitness goals when I was 55 as well. I am now a few weeks away from 59 and have done quite well. Just stick with it and MAKE the time, you just have to be a little creative. If weight loss is also a concern visit the new years resolution thread as it is fat loss orientated more so than here.

I started working out about 4 months ago, I have progressed very well in such a short time, not sure if some of its due to the fact I used to workout religiously years ago, back then I was in the best shape of my life..

Thanks!!

Normal people only supplement with 10 grams a day. I supplement with 20-30 grams a day along with 6 scoops of whey a day (2 scoops in between meals). Your most essential supplement is a multi vitamin which I only recommend the GNC mega man to my personal training clients. It has a 4 hour disintegration rate and has a anti oxidant profile in it which is essential do to the free radicals and cortisol released while training.

Actually if you eat a good variety of quality foods in sufficient quantities supplementation is not needed and the neurological response to weight training can trigger growth hormones adequate for muscle growth. look back to the old days before supplementation was ever heard of, there were some pretty big and strong bodybuilders and strong men.

That's funny because I was always fairly lean but going through my divorce I started packing it on. Fortunately I still have fairly good genetics so weight loss isn't a concern for me, I'm at the stage where I am looking to add lean muscle. Believe me, I'm no slouch, I'm in pretty good shape for any age never mind 58 going on 59.

Actually if you look back on documentation most bodybuilders were popping DBol like tic tacs and Strong men competitors such as Bill Kazmiar can be seen with coke on their faces prior to events.

As for eating sufficient foods in quantity's for bodybuilding supplementation is a must. Normal jo shmo only needs 2600 calories a day according to most basal metabolic rates. Excess supplementation is needs due to cortisol release which actually causes catabolism.

I'm talking way before the Arnold days and such. I believe a guy named doug Hepburn was the first to ever bench 500 and that was maybe in the 50's. What about the great Olympic champs back in the 40's and 50's. Don't think they did much supplementation back then.

That's as natural as can be. But nearly anyone can obtain that these days. I don't think it is much of a physique personally. I have surpassed that by far with basic supplements at 20 years old (Vitamins, fish, oil, whey). Now at thirty I have nearly qualified as a pro (so so close to that pro card )

Thera a big difference between building muscle and sculpting a pro class physique. Look at some power lifters, they look like fat slobs. Some early body builders did have that sculpted look but they are not that common, could they compete at today's level, absolutely but only in all natural classes. Supplements definitely gives you an edge, that's why we all use them.

Added a tidbit for a more accurate statement

They for sure give you an "edge" but me personally I don't want to become dependent on them and never have. The truth of the matter is if you put in the work the results will come. I use them a couple of times a year generally before vacation and at the end of the year....
