If you think college football and basketball are amature sports then you are delusional and to some degree baseball.....they rest are pure amaturism.
The NCAA by it's own history is not consistent with sanctions.....Ohio State, it's coaches, some players and some boosters are all in this together......The coach KNEW they were doing wrong, the Administration KNEW the players were doing wrong, the players KNEW they were doing wrong, the boosters KNEW they were doing wrong...These are the facts and are not in dispute. None of the ADULTS punished the players, lobbied for them to play in last years bowl game and they played......... Miami is in the same type of situation ( Extra Benefits) and self imposed a bowl ban this year, why didn't Ohio St....It was not like they were going to some big BCS bowl..they are 6-6 this year, playing a 6-6 team...SO WHAT? They were smug in there actions in the beginning and smug in their actions till the end. Many major universities have the problem of extra benefits....the problem comes when they try to cover it up because it ALWAYS comes out. As an Alabama fan I was pissed about the Cam Newton thing last year. His father Admitted he tried to pimp his son out, which is clearly a violation but the NCAA ruled he could play????????????????? These kids grow up in not so great places and get what they can get when they can get it.......it's wrong but tell them that. How can you blame a kid who comes from nothing when he receives a 100.00 handshake, a free meal, invited to a party, a tatoo or whatever for just signing his name....the problem arises when the kid thinks he is all that and then it all comes out. A couple of years ago I went to watch Alabama play in a bowl game...we stayed in the team hotel.......Players would frequently come down to the lobby and sign autographs for fans staying in the hotel....mostly kids were getting things sign and the adults didn't bother the kids. Hell I wanted autographs but didn't approach them........THEN one adult idoit comes up with 20 footballs to be signed...Really 20? It didn't take long for Coach Saban to kill the autograph session. Each year at spring practice the offer a period of time for this as well but it is controlled by the school. My point is this.....The NCAA does not have the manpower to chase everyone and the small fish get away, they punish the bigger school in an effort to say " Hey we are on top of this" but in reality they do not have a clue. They are not consistent at all and after the SMU death penalty they are very reluctant to really harm schools because of MONEY IMO they need to have a 7 person commitee or at least one person from every conference and they should govern college football.....Make rules about recruiting, benefits, drug use, police arrests etc........ and then publish the penalties for each offense............For example if you test positive for a banned substance like POT you can not play for one year, you will not be allowed any post season awards or whatever you decide the rules and punishment should be....This would stop this type of behavior...Just like every adult has at their work.....you violate this rule and we do this...smoke POT and your gone.....Anyone ever heard of teh words Zero Tolerance, try sexual harrassment and see how far that gets you. If a school violates the rules then they are fined...not 50k no more like 2 million and then they are not allowed into the post season....Money is a great motivator...then alot of this crap would stop. JMHO

First: It is not fair to punish the CURRENT players at Ohio State. The guys who did wrong are gone and making money. Now some poor kid misses his shot to shine in a bowl game because of something former coaches and alumni did? How is that fair? Do I agree that what was done was wrong? Yeah. But the horse is out of the barn and the damned barn burned down long before the NCAA stepped in.
The Penn State issue is even worse (I am an Alum) I agree that people need to be in jail over the cover up and I hope Sandusky burns in hell for what he did to those kids and Penn State. But, what did the kids who are there to play and get an education do to deserve NCAA Sanctions and as it was so stated: "The team shut down for 5 years blah blah blah" ?!!? The kids who are there right now to play football did NOTHING that was in violation of ANY NCAA regs..NONE. Why would the NCAA even get involved? This had nothing to do with the team - it has EVERYTHING to do with a former coach. Yet everyone wants to say that this is a PENN STATE thing. Not Fair.

The players should have been punished while they were still playing, they shouldn't have played in the bowl game in the end of that season. Not one 2 years later.

The Cam Newton thing was different. When it all came out he was still at school in the middle of a nation title season and Heisman campaign. Ohio state players and coaches are gone now, Reggie Bush was already in the NFL. The NCAA was no longer making money from OSU or Bush. Newton was drawing big TV ratings and sales.

The infractions of the players pale in comparison to the cover-up by the Head Coach. OSU hire a new coach and goes on there merry way after a slap on the fingers. This is ridiculous. I am tired of it. Shut the program down for a year and allow assist the players with relocation to other programs that were not involved. After this occurs at three or four football factories watch how fast the culture changes.
PSU -- disgraceful. Some will go to prison and the program should be shut down for two or three years. Where is Amos Alonzo Stagg when we need him? |

If OSU had admitted fault instead of delaying the punishment and lobbying for their players to serve suspensions later it would've happened. Just another fine example of OSU's arrogance during the whole thing.

Auburn, PSU and OSU are completely different......What happened at PSU is CRIMINAL. PERIOD......you know go to prison criminal.
Auburn and OSU broke the rules not laws.........their integrity is now in question. Unfortunately life is not FAIR.......so you can't go on the " It isn't Fair" arguement....There is so many times in life when innocent people get screwed over and just because some 18 to 21 yr old kid doesn't get to play on extra football game in a bowl game doesn't really concern me as much as those who lost millions to Bernie Madoff, The kids affected by Sandusky, the Military people who are coming home with no leds or arm, the person who loses his job because the company is downsizing and sending their work overseas etc.... While I understand these are seperate issues but in reality it is the same thing " It is not FAIR" Colleges make a tremendous amount of money...In 2009 Alabama NETTED 87 MILLION dollars, TEXAS was more so Alabama has a finiancial interest in EVERYTHING Alabama. OSU MAKES A TON OF MONEY aso do most major universities........People get on a moral high horse when they talk about college football, college coaches ESPECIALLY when it is their school the cheer for are an alumnus of etc...... 2 years ago LSU fans, boosters, students all wanted Les Miles fired....now they LOVE him...Why because he is winning...He is the same coach he was 2 years ago.....It is all CONDITIONAL love.........If they win we love them, if they lose we hate them........and NO ONE cares about their politics, morals, violations etc....as long as they win I know off one ONE college football booster whom I think is sincere, honest and has moral character and thet is T. Boone Pickens. He is teh riches booster in college football and donates MILLIONS to Ok St.....his only stipulation is this. If you ever embarass me by doing things you know are wrong then my money will STOP.....Sure there has been a player do stupid things at Ok St, but as a university they do not tolerate it and deal with problems swiftly and appropriately. PSU and Oh St will have a black eye fopr a LONG time over this, PSU longer than OSU.....all this talk will quickly end when OSU starts winning, just like it did at USC.....
