Helluva way to wake up this morning
Woke up to the sounds of sirens this morning...ignored and tried to go back to sleep. When the sirens got more and more frequent, I figured I might want to get up and check things out.
This is what I saw. Not my building, but only 1/8th mile from mine. VERY creepy watching a building exactly like the one I live in burn up. Click the link below to see the chronological photos. Only re-sized for quick posting. I realize a lot of photos have motion blur, it was 6 AM and I was out in gym shorts and flip-flops and it was a bit chilly...I was cold and had adreraline and was on 2 hours of sleep...hard to hold the camera still, I guess, huh? http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...albumId=998276 |

:( Glad it wasn't your building, but it's sad to see anyone's home in flames. :(
But. Next time, WAKE UP! It could have been your building! (I hope you also have smoke detectors?!) |

Oh yeah, when I got to that building it's bells and the one next to it that's melting (see all pics) were sounding loud.
It was pretty neat, every once in a while all the trucks (at least a dozen) would sound horns and sirens. Not sure if that was a way of communicating the status of the fire, or just to wake up the neighborhood...but the latter got the effect of it pretty well. |

It's one thing to see it in pictures, but it is another to actually see it in person, right? I've worked traffic for those fire (to keep people from driving over hoses and all) and it was increadible to say the least. Just the heat coming off of the building was intense. It makes you wonder how the guys in those suits are able to get up so close and do it w/out overheating and burning up. Yes, I know the suits are flame resistant and you could actually stand in the flames for a while w/out getting burned. In fact, there was a guy trapped in a building here in SA (long story) w/ his suit on and he was able to walk around for a while in the fire...not getting burned...but the sweat in his suit started to boil. He did make it out, thank God.
Anyway, back to the topic...sorry. I feel bad for that lady. It looks like she was able to grab her most valuable items...pictures and all...poor lady. Keep w/ the story if you could. I'm interested in finding out what Arson claims started the fire. And I sure hope everyone got out ok. BTW, welcome back Ed! |

I had the same thing happen to me but it was at 1am. Came home with the wife (gf at the time) and we were just getting into bed when we heard all the noise. Walked out and sure shit it was the building next to us (50-100').
Damn smoker left a burning cig on the wood deck! |
