Obama, lawmakers agree on "cash-for-clunkers" bill

UPDATED:http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090505/...s_energy_autos

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama and Democratic lawmakers reached agreement on Tuesday on a legislative proposal designed to stimulate U.S. auto sales, which have fallen to near 30-year lows.

The one-year plan crafted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives would offer vouchers worth up to $4,500 for owners to replace their less fuel efficient vehicles for models that get better gas mileage.

The goal of the "cash for clunkers" legislation is to sell 1 million vehicles.

Cool! My wifes Kia Sorento gets less MPG than a Camaro. I'll take a $4500 voucher please.... And it would help our economy instead of Korea's. Come on vouchers.

How is this gonna help the economy though. To put used car mechanics out of work. And make a less amount of affordable cars out there because used cars are disappearing.

Terrible Idea.

I have to find the article but unless it has something different in it thatn the last proposal, I don't like it.

They should put a stipulation in there that you can only use the 4500 for American owned companies. Otherwise its pointless, and maybe even detrimental.....

So where and when do I get my voucher? Seeing as I'll be waiting for who knows how much longer for my car it would be nice to have something good to come out of this.

Edit: Found this info so far. http://www.freep.com/article/2009050...h+for+clunkers

Gonna need more info than that. It did mention 'Domestic' cars but how old does the 'Clunker' have to be? Does it have to be running? Registered? Get bad fuel efficiency numbers? What will they do with them? Is it in conjunction with a trade in?

Too many questions.
