Don't know if I can buy a government car?

Anyone else having problems with this? I just read that the government are going to own a majority stake in GM ... and that the company is effectively going to be nationalized.

I don't know if I can bring myself to invest $35,000 in that ... despite how much I love the car.

I guess I can consider it the LAST car I ever buy from GM ....

My silver SSRS is on its way soon so I need to make a decision ...

Doesn't really bother me. I am getting the Camaro either way. If that actually happens then any future purchases will most likely be from the blue oval or Dodge if they are still around.

The biggest problem I have if this comes to be true is the government is doing this with OUR tax dollars! To me, this means WE own part of GM and should benefit from that in some way.

Wonder with the new green push if it does happen the Camaro will become a 3 cylinder diesel with 88hp and 105 ft tq ha-ha
or a 7000lb hybrid. I'm only joking. I'll get this car ether way but I do agree if the tax payers are the ones that fronted the money that means we own part of the company.
But I'm sure we will see nothing on our end for it.

All, I deleted my original post for a number of reasons. But I just wanted to note that we should be careful that this doesn't turn into a political discussion else it will be locked/deleted.

GM has done this in the past. Economic turmoil is dangerous to big industries sometimes, and this is one of those times for GM. They will pull through and buy their company back. Don't back out on good products because the company isn't owned by your favorite family. America voted for a government based on the belief that this set of elected officials will run the country better than the last group. Saying that you don't believe that goes against the democratic principles that made our country great. The government is only taking stake to get its loan money back over time. It means that the government believes that GM is viable. How is that a bad thing?

Despite bordering on politics, I still think that my current post makes an important point. The government isn't trying to socialize all US industry as people are fearing. The government wants its loan money back eventually and for GM to survive. If your buddy borrowed a lot of money from you, you'd want it back, too. GM is a friend of the US government, and that is not bad. All of those fleet sales allow GM to invest in performance cars and trucks, and that makes us happy.

As long as there is no mud-slinging then I don't have a problem. Your comments/statements always (IMHO) come across a pretty objective, but the ones I've read did not. As long as they are kept objective and respectful, I think we'll be okay.

This thread is going to have a short leash though...

I saw a news report on this last night and it actually bothered me quite a bit. If they have majority interest then they can decide what cars to build and with all the "green" stuff being the fad, I can see GM just building econo cars and stop building anything sporty. Especially with the new mandates on minimum fuel mileage requirements.

I am still hoping for the best, but it just looks sad to me right now.

See - I'll admit this post is a reason why I hoped to leave this thread open. I'm not politically knowledgable but I share a similar thought on how much the government will have possible control over GM. I'd like to read more objective comments along these lines, personally.
