I am paying $190 a month to State Farm for my 3 vehicles and Home owners insurance. The last claim I had was for $600 in 2007 on an HHR. Last ticket was in 1993(not for speeding though).

I'm 44 and pay 58.03 a month with Erie, they are in the eastern part of the country. Had all state for about 20 years and they kept promising lower rates when I got older and they never delivered. got tired of there sh*t and shopped around and I am glad I did. came down to Erie and another national country but the people in my area that had Erie gave them consistently high marks and I can't be happier. when I had My 2010 1LT V6 the premiums keep going down yearly then when I went to my 11 2SS the premium went from 57.40 to 58.03 going to a V8, was surprised it only went up .63 cents. I paid more than twice that when I had All State, something in the 120's a month when I started looking around!

I pay just a bit under $2300 a year for full coverage on 3 vehicles. 2013 SS, 2013 Equinox and a 2002 Blazer 4x4. Been with SF for many years and no complaints. When I traded my 96 vette for a 2011SS there was less than $40 a year difference between the two.

And $2000 is light. It's going to cost me well over $6K per year per child to insure my kids when they turn 17 on a basic economy car. If they were growing up where I grew up, it would easily cost double that.
So lets say you have two kids plus you and maybe a wife. You're telling me you're going to pump out more than 12-15k next year on car insurance alone? And you think this is normal????

My kids are 7 and 5, so I don't have to worry about their insurance for a while. We'll have to see what the bill comes out to, but in 1994 when I got added to my parent's "Liability-Only" insurance coverage on their van (they only had 1 car at the time), their rates went from less than $1K/year to somewhere around $8K/year. They literally couldn't afford it so they dropped me from coverage and I was unable to drive.

In the end I went out and got a motorcycle on my own and insured it on my own. From a liability standpoint, there isn't much damage you can do with a bike so full insurance on a 750cc sportbike was only $1200/year.

I no longer live in Hudson county NJ (which when I was a teenager had the highest insurance rates in the nation - didn't help that I lived 1 town over from Newark which was the stolen-car capital of the US for more than a decade). But in 10 years when my oldest is ready to drive, it's going to cost a boatload to insure him.

Yes, that's normal for my area. Insurance costs do go down when you turn 25, and when you get married, and when you buy a house - yes. But the largest determining factor in your insurance rates is where you live. In 2005, my wife pregnant with our first son and us living in Brooklyn, I went out and bought a 1998 Subaru Forester and sold our 2003 BMW K1200LT. Full coverage on that car (a 7 year old vehicle with 117K miles on it that was purchased for only $6200) was $3600/year with no accidents and no points on my license. So we dropped the full coverage and went liability only, which dropped the bill to $2500/year.

Does that seem high to pay over 1/3rd the price of the car each year? No, not really. S-Class Benzes are a dime a dozen around here. A $40K 3-series BMW is literally a low-end vehicle in Brooklyn/Manhattan. Put me in a blindfold and have me drive straight through any intersection and I have a better chance of hitting a car worth more than $30K than I do one worth less. Chances are really high on hitting a car worth more than $80K.

That's what my insurance is paying for ... the damage to the other person, not just my POS car. So $2500/year yes, seemed fairly reasonable to me.

Since then, I've actually become invested privately in the insurance industry (I own a decent amount of Berkshire Hathaway stock and one of Berkshire's main businesses is insurance and re-insurance) so through my own investment research I've learned quite a bit about the insurance industry. While you all think it's a rip-off and a scam, most of your insurance companies are holding on by a thread.

Yeah, from what I can tell Florida sucks for insurance as well.

Didn't read my last sentence did you. Allstate lost $131MM in 2013 after everything was said and done. The insurance business is a very tough one and few people do it well.

When I called the agent's office the lady I was talking to told me "well, your're 19 years old driving a 2012 Camaro, it's going to be expensive" which really made me upset. (I didn't let her know that)

I'm currently paying more money for insurance on the car at 19 then I was at 17, what is the deal? I also have all the discount that apply $2,227.12 worth per year, the lady said that I have every discount that they offer, I have no accidents and no tickets.

Pay to play, okay cool, but my car has lost 22% of its value and the insurance has increased. If it makes a difference both times it was the premium for collision that increased.

EDIT: I should probably also mention I'm paying $786 for 6 months with $500 collision, $250 comprehensive and 100k/300k liability.
try AAA...

Been with State Farm for about 30 years and been very happy when it comes to claims. Been with state Farm in NY, PA, VA, MI, NC, TX and now in Ontario Canada. As others have said, makes a big difference based on where you live, as well as gender, age, driving history, and if you bundled home or renters personal property, and multiple autos.

Last Nov. noticed my 2011 2LT Camaro rate increased about $15 per month, my 1998 Riviera did not increase. Had previously filed a claim with State Farm when I was rear-ended & only bumper needed a repaint. After Camaro rate increase called State Farm and spoke to CS. Response from CS I drive a Camaro and all rates increased. My response I am getting older, car is getting older, already listed as a low mileage driver, clear record (no tickets etc.). CS: Would you like your agent to call you? Response: Yes. Agent called within 36 hours. "I see you store the Camaro winters and only drive about 1,500 miles per year." I said No, I only drive the Riviera 1,500 miles per year and its the Riv. stored winters. Camaro is daily driver and only drive it 1,500 miles per year as well. Result was my Camaro rate was reduced from previous year. Helps to talk directly to your agent.

Back in the 1980s, moved from Manhattan to center city Philadelphia and my auto insurance almost doubled in Philly. All about location. Don't hate me but I am now 63 living in Ottawa, Ontario (nations capitol city), both my cars (1,500 miles per year each) have a $500 deductable, $58.63 per month for my 2011 2LT, $52.50 per month for my 1998 Riviera.

If shopping insurance companies, web search customer satisfaction regarding claims filed. It is not about getting lowest rates but how your insurance company handles claims.
