Bingo.

That's the loophole within CAFE...EPA numbers have been updated...CAFE numbers haven't.

they will surely look for better mpg.
Uh, not to mention, they just spent a ton of money to get the factory prepped to build these things. They at least need to break even on that before they'd even THINK about axeing the Camaro... and that would be like setting fire to a Money Tree just because the neighbors don't like it

see, this is why i hate the media, they contort everything! So, not your fault for getting this wrong; The new emissions plan states that the COMPANY AVERAGE of cars should be 35 mpg (or whatever it was, dont remember exact numbers) and trucks 27. Meaning, if they have a car that gets less, others need to make more to balance it out.

The Camaro is the only coupe other than the Cobalt in the whole GM line. It's marketed great and grabs ex-monte carlo owners as well. I could see a strict limit on V8 Camaro's for the next few years but when they become profitable again and the economy is fixed the H.O. Camaro's will again be kicking butt. I think GM got this car right on all aspects and it should survive.

Just going from memory I think they were.

1. Impala SS - This makes sense since the Monte SS and Grand Prix GXP are gone.
2. Cobalt SS Sedan I think coupe stays until Cobalt is replaced.
3. G6 GXP - Not surprising since Pontiac is going away but I remember autoblog had an article about it.
4. ?
5. ?

I will have to do more looking for the last two.

Many, many good points here on this thread. My thoughts are we are still sailing in uncharted water here and anything could happen. Some of you talk like the new Camaro is GM's savior and a very profitable car. Guys we are the minority die hard fans. 15,000 pre-orders is okay but nothing to get all excited about. We'll have to see when more of these hit the road if seeing the car spurs more sales from new buyers. That is what it will take to keep this baby alive. Remember GM killed the F-Body with sales of around 75,000 per year so this ones got a ways to go. And at some point early demand will be satisfied and they will no longer be able to get MSRP for these. They may even have to offer some incentives which cuts into profitability. TIme will tell.

GM failed to retain the Oldsmobile Alero as a Chevrolet when they canned the entire division in 2002, despite the fact that they were selling like hotcakes in the post 9/11 economy. I thought that was a big mistake....

I read a local article while on vacation in San Francisco in April, that was also one columnist's opinion, which stated that the Camaro would be the "death nail" of GM, that it symbolized everything that is wrong with GM. He went on to make the SS car out to be a sin, that it was even being produced....

I totally disagree with that. I believe history repeats itself. I believe GM needs to look to its past, and design and build cars based on two main goals:

1) build cars people want to own
2) build cars people will buy

In other words: Make them desirable and affordable! That's the Camaro!!
Who is this reporter? I would like to drag him behind my new SS when it arrives.
