I ordered a DPMS Recon in 7.62 in early january. They are a good combo of quality and affordability. LMT, JP, make good ar's too. Not sure what the budget is, but sig makes a piston ar in 7.62 that's around 2100 or so.

(I'm sure there are a million companies I'm forgetting too)

I don't know anybody that has one, and I haven't fired it so no. Their 5.56 guns are good though.

Need your folks help.

I am thinking of buying a longer range target rifle for fun...

Anyway..
I am thinking about a .300 win mag Remington 700 with a 26" barrel. By the end of this year I may try and find one. My goal is to buy one for $3-600 or so. It can be used, that is fine. Then I want to get a scope on it too by the end of this year. I want something that can work quite long. My limit would be around $400 for the scope.

Then next year I would intend to buy an accuracy international stage 1.5 with a bipod. That is going to be another cool $1500 or so.

So I guess what I am curious about, are my price points realistic for a decent 700? Probably won't have a muzzle brake.

What distance?

Remington 700 or Savage 10 in .308....... It'll shoot plenty far and with a little work, can be very accurate! 308 won't break the bank as quick as some other calibers will, and both rifles can be had for decent money.

The cheap synthetic stocks are just that... cheap! There are plenty of options for aftermarket in both rifles, but the Rem even more so.

Get a GOOD scope the first time around, it may last you a lifetime if you take care of it, where you'll throw 20 cheap ones away when they fail.

Another good point, I know you're not a little guy, but the magnum calibers can make you jumpy after a few rounds, you can start making mistakes and picking up bad habits. Even 308 will smack your shoulder, but not as bad.

By the time you outgrow .308, you'll know what you want as your next rifle.

Just a few things to chew on

I just got the new Guns & Ammo and it's on the cover. It got a pretty good review, looks to have 2.5-3 MOA on average. Good price point at $1400 I believe, but you'd have to expect that price to be double if you can find one.

If you have never had a distance rifle, I wouldn't start with a .300 Win Mag. The recoil will cause bad habits and the cost of ammo will limit training. A 700 SPS V in .308 Win will do great for a beginner and will hit 800-900 yards reasonably well.

I bought a SPS in .30-06 for a longer range target rifle. I mounted a Bushnell Tactical Elite 3200 5-15X magnification and it's a solid scope.

300 win mag

I have a sako III with a very good Leopold tactile long range scope on it and the first thing I would recommend is a muzzle break. Cut recoil by over half. Keeps u thinking about ur shooting and not the ugly bruise u are going to have. I shot 1 inch groups at 300 with this all day...smith gun here in San Angelo built it custom and its fantastic to shot

The recoil was of decent concern to me. I'm 175 pounds. In reality my plan was long range shooting. I don't know where though. I thought maybe if i get a muzzle brake it would manageable. I really don't need it but family trait is to buy ridiculous stuff i don't need.
