Stovt001, let me preface this by saying I very much respect your quest to compare these cars as fairly as possible. I want to rebut some thing you said though:
Quote:
As for the price...$30 thousand is what will get you these "fabulous" performance numbers. No less. So unless you want a bumbly little genesis with a V6...you have to pony up 30k. Nope. Because the suspension comes standard. . Of course I'll admit the brakes aren't as good. But the suspension is an improved version of what's in the G8 GT. The Camaro comes with a Sport suspension right out of the box; for $22,995. It's just a mental letdown that it isn't called the "track package".![]() I'm hesitant to investigate the reasons the drivetrain needs such an invasive and performance-inhibiting protection mechanism...see "tin can" below... What?! C'mon now -- don't be exaggerating things... ![]() Quote:
![]() Quote:
The Genesis is a smaller car in every dimension. That alone explains 75% of the issue. And it's a take it or leave it issue. Some, like me, feel the Camaro is absolutely the perfect size. Others would like it larger, and some would like it smaller....it is what it is... The Camaro...was built for a V8 from the start. As such, ALL models benefit from the designed ability to withstand stupid amounts of power and torque. In fact, go look up the Genesis sedan with the V6 and V8...It's much closer in dimensions to the Camaro. It's about the same weight V6 for V6, but heavier than the Camaro where the V8 is concerned. The coupe model has that same V6, and managed to shave 350 pounds off. I'm convinced that in addition to being a far smaller car -- the coupe is an absolute tin can where structure is concerned.... Quote:
![]() I'm sure the Genesis will feel as though you can throw it around like a toy thanks to it's low weight, whereas the Camaro will have a more solid feel to it (while still being ABLE to throw it around). Personally -- I like that solid feel....but that's me. Finally...read this. You'll find a more tame representation of the Genesis coupe here...and keep in mind the V6 Camaro's already been hailed as the American G37...http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do.../pageId=161982 |

A tick over 13.0 sec. and you're through the quarter-mile. It's a rush, of course, but not overly dramatic. Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

I want to reiterate that I'm not trying to say anything close to the notion that this isn't a nice ride. I simply just think that it's being way over-represented, and its competitors (Camarocoughcough) are being undercut some...

You know, we keep saying to get those numbers you need the track pack, which is true, but I wonder what the difference would be without the track pack. That would really make the difference in determining whether it can compete in the low to mid $20K range.

Those numbers aren't too good for the price. But, they are also edmunds numbers which are consistently slower than most others report (they did say it was 6.1 with 1ft of roll out). No matter how you cut it, its worse performance than we are expecting out of the V6 Camaros, and the Genesis will cost more unless you start adding options to the Camaro.

This of course assumes the Nissan will indeed be better built (even if you're still thinking about the quality of 1980's Hyundais and not taking into account that their quality is now ranked as good as anyone else's by many independent quality assessments, I've not heard good things about Nissan reliability and materials cheapness either, especially on Z cars). As far as the hard numbers such as the 0-60 and so on, are you going to be drag racing the car every day? Taking it to the track? For most buyers, the answer is likely no. The raw numbers may have it a tad slower than the Z, but for day to day use is still going to be plenty fast and corner very well...when comparing base to base, the Z is $5,000 more expensive, and loaded to loaded, the Z is about $7,500 more expensive. It's entirely your judgment call, as is your opinion on the styling and the feel of each car's drivability, but a lot of people are going to say it's not $5,000-$7,500 better. Some people would say $5,000 worth of mods would go a long way toward making a Genesis Coupe blow a stock base Z out of the water. And people who simply can't afford a $30K car may also say the Genesis Coupe will be just fine.

If that's how you want to spend your money, then good on you. However, a lot of people are going to see that X car performs almost as well as Y car, X car is fully loaded while Y car is stripped, and they're both the same price...and would pick X because they get more for the money.
