Her logic seems to be that I don't have to pay rent and that if she wasn't there I'd still be paying my own bills. I just don't really consider that to be fair since I'm doing her a huge favor (or at least that's how I see it).

She thinks she's entitled to the extra space you seem to have. It doesn't work that way. Your privacy and additional expenses because of her being there has to be worth something.

Her logic is flawed. Just because you are fortunate enought to not have to pay rent, is not her right.

Seems like my sons logic.. but Dad.. just because I'm 20, have a job and am not going to college isn't a good reason to charge me rent.

me - "Son, it's not all rent - it's 250 a month for room and board. That includes your cable tv/internet, electricity, water, laundry detergent.. oh and FOOD "..

Good luck Belle, you are certainly in the right asking your friend to contribute, and pay rent.

I'd put her ass out in a heartbeat a real friend wouldn't take advantage of your kindness like that if she could spend money for a rental she better be coming up with some money for rent, this is an example as to why I don't trust many people at all good luck and keep us posted

Sorry to hear of your predicament Belle. Do you want a new roommate? J/K

I have been in a similar situation before. You need to explain to her that when she moved in, the cost of the utilities have since gone up, and that is due to another person living there. Mention that your cost would still be the same had she not moved in, and due to her moving in, prices have gone up. Try throwing in there that no one should live anywhere for free. It's one thing if you are not paying any more for rent, since you don't pay rent. However, if you are paying for the food and snacks, and she is eating it, guess what, she needs to give you something toward that. Otherwise, you each should be responsible for your own groceries. Keep an itemized list of what you bought.

I'd also check your laws in your area to see if you can remove a tenant. Since you never signed anything (my assumption) I would write up something that both of you agree on, I.E. who pays what, splitting the bills 50/50, etc. and both sign and notarize it.

You seem like a very cool and nice girl. However, don't let your friends, nor anyone take advantage of you. I can tell you now, based on what you have said, that she is using you to live off of, and has no sense of responsibility. You should cut your losses while you can. A real friend would not do these things to you.

Let us know how it turns out Belle.

-Chris

"I'm absolutely livid at this point and would love to hear if any of you have encountered an experience like this and what you did.

I let a friend move in with me"

I knew what the rest said........send her packing

Couldn't have said any of this better myself, I've kicked people out for less than what you're going through. You have a big heart, she is taking your kindness for weakness... Now show her you're not weak

Yeah thats how I see it. She should still pay rent though. Its the right thing to do since she is using your ammenities and eating your food. You gotta law down the law Sarah and show her the door. If she has that kind of attitude I dont see it changing.

I know she has a savings account too because she mentioned it to me once.

I didn't back down via texts. She says she'll "see what she can do to have me the money by friday."

At 25 years old she was still living with her parents. Lived in an apartment with a roommate for a year when she was 23. I'm starting to see why...

I would say that the friendship is over seeing she is communicating by texting. The two of you have a month to month verbal rent agreement. I would suggest going to your local court house, and get a notice of eviction going. The longer you wait the more difficult it becomes to evict someone. You state does have landlord rights, you should be able to find them at their website, just follow those.
