From what I can follow, being over the sea here, both had (or should I say the "big three" have).

And AFAIK, the Camaro outdid the Mustang for a while in terms of go, Ford is now trying to outdo Chevrolet... I guess Chevrolet won't sit down and watch it all happen without a "fight" once the 2012 Camaro comes out...

Not true, they can continue competing at a performance/styling level, which is what I am hoping for. As far as the different packages, if Ford can offer it and make money, what harm is there in giving the consumer these options? Same goes for the Camaro, it's quite obvious to me that there is a consumer base interested in different packages. It excites the consumer and continues to keep them focused on the brand and the car.

You guys do realize this is just a name that came from an online contest, to rename the performance package? This isn't some new model, and frankly I think the name is kind of stupid. I think they should have just stuck with "Performance Package".

I just can't imagine driving around in a "Mayhem" Mustang anymore than a "Transformers" Camaro, but then again, I'm not 18 anymore either.

I can't believe people are saying there are too many models of Mustang to choose from. It seems better than the alternative. And being at the end of it's life cycle, the Mustang can afford to do these kind of things. It's great for the enthusiast, so I don't see a negative to it.

Outside of stickers and upgraded interiors, you have about 7 Mustang models..... V6, GT, Boss, "Mayhem", Dub Edition, California Special, Cobra....not to mention the Eco Boost V6 Mustang which is already been confirmed for either 2013/2014...

All of those models offer DIFFERENT physical equipment/body parts/performance etc...

and then of course you can add the Super Snake/Roush models...but in that instance, you can say the same for the Callaway/SLP model Camaros (i excluded verts since they can come in just about any one of these models...)

There's a difference between offering options, and offering the entire catalog. The Mustang has also been around in virtually the same aspect for almost 8 years..... it should have a ton of options such as gears/suspension/etc...

The point I was making, and still am making, is that all Ford can do to compete with the Camaro right now is throw out more gimmicked up Mustangs. Instead of actually trying to combat the Camaro, they're just throwing a bandaid on it..
The California Special is just an appearance package on the GT, no different then the Camaro's optional rally sport or anniversary package.

For the Current 2011 production line up

V6
Lacking fogs in grill and 5.0/ GT badges

GT
Fogs in grill, 5.0 badge on fenders and GT gas cap

Boss
obvious

GT500
obvious

Any other new Mustang you see on the road is from a job from a tuner like Roush, Shelby, Saleen, ect. which get sent there for modification and then sold, just like SLP, Hennessy, Nickey, ect.

After all, look how Buick has gone off the rails since they stopped focusing on the tried and true 75+ demographic. They had a lock on that segment, but have now screwed it up.

P.S Too many options also pisses me off.

You do have a point on the age thing. It does take more to make a model going into its 8th year seem fresh when competing against a model that is only entering its 3rd year. If the Camaro where allowed to go into year 8 with few visual changes, it would have the same problem at that time.

However, I wouldn't call the V6 Performance Package (now Mayham package...I don't like the new name either) a gimmick. It is a serious handling package that includes summer tires, the GT suspension and brakes, and a gear option for those who want improved handling (actually better handling than the GT because of the weight advantage), but don't want to have to pay for the V8 or suffer the fuel mileage penalty. I think the Camaro LT could benefit from such an option, instead of just giving them all a "touring" suspension.

I'd be surprised if Chevy wants to spend a bunch of money to go after the few Ford V6 sales that we are talking about when they would possibly be reducing their own revenue by doing so. I don't see a business case for it. In fact, I think Ford is over expanding the Mustang line. They have to be at the point of diminishing returns. Who is sitting there thinking, "Geez, if Ford would just make <<fill in the blank kind of Mustang>> I'd buy one!"? I'd say not too many people! And the same goes with Camaro buyers excluding those waiting for a Z28 or ZL1.
Traditionally, the V6 sales are what allows them to keep making the V8 versions.

Still, Camaro continues to outsell Mustang and Challenger in the First quarter of 2011. And this in a year in which Challengers are sporting a new 6.4L HEMI and Mustang with its new 5.0L. For as much as people hate on the Camaro, the people who are actually buying cars PREFER the Camaro! Sales dont lie!

Yes, we have covered this before, an 8 year drought has a tendency to create pent up demand.
