That's like saying because a "Toyota Camry" won the race Sunday night at Darlington that Camry's are now in a general sense a fast car.
Not all Harley's are "slow" - but the majority, by motorcycle standards, are. But, that's not really the point of the Harley anyways - if you wanted technology and speed you wouldn't be riding an air-cooled motor with the a crankshaft designed not to keep the engine balanced or make power, but simply to make the trademark sound that sells so well. They are are targeted to the cruising and wanna look cool crowd. They cruise great. And they sure look great too. If those are the top boxes on your checklist, then you buy a Harley. If you have other boxes at the top of your checklist, probably not.

Camaro is a cool car but if you want to go fast there are much faster cars out there. Harley isn't at the top of the list but the camaro isnt either. |

You don't buy a Harley to claim king of the sped hill. Been riding 40 years and last purchase was a bagger that I still ride.
Riding is not dangerous, people running into riders is. |

It's not how fast you arrive..It's HOW you arrive. Movies and songs will never be written about plastic covered bikes.

Considering for every 100 cars you see on the road, you see maybe a few bikes at most? What about the accident to fatality ratios? I bet it's a lot less in cars. (Straight from the NHTSA: According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2006, 13.10 cars out of 100,000 ended up in fatal crashes. The rate for motorcycles is 72.34 per 100,000 registered motorcycles. Motorcycles also have a higher fatality rate per unit of distance travelled when compared with automobiles.) I'll take my chances in a car, rather than extremely exposed with your fate in the hands of everyone else. I just had a relative who rear-ended someone going about 30-40 on the highway while he was on his Honda streetbike. The way he flew off his bike, he would've been killed had it not been for his kevlar suit. Granted it was his fault, but that's not the point. If I rear-end someone in my car doing 30-40, I'll walk away with probably only a sore neck/legs and some scratches, and that's it.Sorry if I'm rustling jimmies, but I don't care for bikes. Never have, never will. I can also do without their "I don't need to abide by the laws, so I'll just ride on the shoulder in this construction zone while everyone else waits in 5 miles of traffic" attitudes also. Not that I don't miss it - gosh every spring I fight the urge to get another bike. But when you've got kids, it's a selfish hobby - with the Camaro I can bring the little guy out for some fun - he's four now and he constantly is telling me to go "fast". History repeats itself I guess - my parents told me this would happen! As far as the whole Harley's being slow thing - I'm not knocking anybody. Heck, I've owned a Sportster 1200 - it's not like I'm speaking about something I don't have first hand knowledge on. Yea - they are slow. There's nothing wrong with that - I don't think too many people looking for a fast bike go out and buy a Harley. The Harley buyer is looking for a different experience, they love the journey, they love the noise, etc. Heck, I like those things too, but I put performance near the top of my list, and so that eliminates the traditional Harley for me. I'm a cruise-missile (crotch rocket/cruiser love child) kind of guy. M-109R, V-Rod, Rocket III, V-Max - those are all on the short list for me when a bike becomes something I'm willing to risk again some day. My last ride was a 2001 V-Max - what a machine. You want to talk about an epic sound, not much tops the rumble and burble of a V4 that transforms into a NASCAR-eque wail on the top end. It wouldn't kill a 1000cc Rocket up through 150, but there wasn't much it had to fear from a stop up to 100 or so.
