Can you epoxy a magnet to the door and a steel striker to the storm door? Or Velcro?

If you get a powerful enough magnet, you should be able to hold the flap to the door without drilling or gluing anything. I use neodymium magnets to hold up blackout cloth to my apartment's metal window surrounds. When removed, there is no sign anything was there. They are strong enough to hold together with my arm between them.

Why not just leave the door open with a hole that big? What is the difference?

Turns out the door isn't metal but all this talk of magnets has given me an idea. Sadly I only remember my 7th grade teaching of magnets so please tell me if this sounds right:
Put one magnet on the outside of the door north pole facing the door and one magnet on the inside of the door south pole facing the door. (I figure they will have to be pretty strong to attract from across the door.
Then put a magnet on the inside of the flap with North pole facing the flap and one on the outside with South pole facing the flap.
I assume this will make the magnets attract when I swing open the flap and there will be no adhesive necessary, or am I missing something.
I'm dyslexic so I might have north and south mixed up a couple places, but I think u probably get the point.

The black one won't use the dog door
You can probably see he is pretty small. I like big dogs but my yard is small :(
When I got him from the rescue he wouldn't even cross a threshold.

That's cool. Hopfully it has a reverse sensor. Wouldn't want to come home to rover being pinched to death under the door.

Cause the door I have now is a thermally insulated one that both cuts down on the ac and keeps the dirt out when there is any type of sand storm.
I've tried just having a hole, it was a mess.

Does epoxy hold up to heat well? I've tried several different command strips and those all failed miserably.

Those are just double backed tape. You can buy 2 part epoxy at a hardware store or home center. For sticking to an aluminum door a general epoxy will work fine, regardless of temperature.

As for the magnet, you're not trying to retain much force so a general magnet and a steel (not stainless) striker should work fine. If you don't mind drilling a few holes in the door some sort of latch would be easy to do as well.

If I was excited about drilling I wouldn't have made the post. I am willing to use it as a last resort but the point of the thread is to avoid drilling.

As for magnets, I have a few laying around the house. I made a couple book cases and used the pretty common magnet striker combo to keep the doors shut tight. Hopefully those hold otherwise I'll have to buy some stronger ones.

A little prop rod (like what holds the hood up on certain cars) might work... that way the door is still closable, when you wish to close it.

Or, for a simpler, but less permanent solution (if you are still wanting to avoid adhesives or drilling), a piece of string tied to the bottom of the door, and the other end wrapped around the doorknob.
