The two aren't really in the same class. Cheating fuel economy regs is a pretty regular occurrence in the auto industry. Normally, it involves exploiting a loophole & what Mitsubishi did goes a bit beyond that. In the end, the main result was that customers had to pay a little bit more to fuel their car than they expected to. While thats bad, its nowhere near what VW did.

Their cheating resulted in releasing many times the harmful NOx emissions than is legally allowed. NOx causes both environmental problems and respiratory problems (ranging from breathing problems to pre-mature death).

what i dont understand, in the usa this is allowed (pics)

but then they complain, vw diesels are not clean enough

It's not. Lots of jurisdictions have laws against it now.

Also every new diesel truck (possibly all diesel vehicles?) sold in the US right now has DEF and other emissions controls. VW was the only one not using DEF, other manufacturers had no idea how they were able to meet standards without it.
