OBD-III Concerns
I'm surprised there hasn't been vehement public discussion about it.
What is OBD-III? OBD III is a term used to describe the concept of "remote OBD." Under this concept, vehicle would have the ability to transmit OBD fault information to roadside receivers, for example, through cellular networks. The benefit of such a concept is that a motorist would not have to take their vehicle to a station for an emissions inspection as long as the vehicle is communicating that there are no active emission-related malfunctions. If the OBD II system has detected a problem, the vehicle owner would be expected to have the problem repaired in a timely fashion. Correction of the problem would be verified through the OBD data transmitted after the vehicle has been serviced. SEMA OBD-III FAQs: http://lobby.la.psu.edu/_107th/093_o..._questions.htm

And it permits the authorities to scan vehicles at will & cite individuals, thereby trouncing on the American 4th Amendment...
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers & effects, against unreasonable searches & seizures shall not be violated.'' It's a bigger issue for individuals who modify their engines.

If you live in a state with inspections/emissions checks they're going to find out anyways. They'd just find out sooner with this.

And if one doesn't, they'll find out with OBD-III.

It's OBD-IV you have to worry about. When your autonomous car is having full on conversations, not only about its operations but your daily routine, with "the man" right under your nose.
A ton foil engine blanket may be in order.

I just did some research...the reason there hasn't been "vehement public discussion" is because apparently this has been an idea for over a decade now and nothing has come to fruition. I mean there are links dating back to 2002 discussing this. Plus, there are a ton of hoops it would have to jump through to work the way you're suggesting, not just from a legal standpoint, but technology-wise too.
It's a non-issue. Go out and drive your modded Camaro and take off your tin foil vehicle cover.

I guess we must wait for it to be nationally adopted to find out if the American public will oppose it. Additionally, if you read the SEMA information, none of it is my suggestion.

Well, I'm not surprised California and Oregon are spearheading yet more stupid legislation. That's typical.
In any case: Quote:

Easiest way around this:
Reprogram car. Disable the MIL for any and all non-major problems. (Like me with my rear catalytic converters.)

As I mentioned, maybe people will become concerned in X amount of years, if/when it becomes reality... maybe it won't be too late.

We learned about the "coming soon" OBD III in tech school back in the early 2000s. Still not here.
If anything the man will just implement the changes they want into OBD II and hope no one notices. If anyone is that worried go full standalone and give up certain amenities. |
