A Taser is actually a brand name but it has become universally used like whirlpool, google, etc.

The way a Taser works is:
Cartridge: has prongs that shoot out and when they enter someone, an electrical charge travels between the prongs. The charge is on the same frequency as the human nervous system. That is why people lock up and fall down as the CNS is confused. If only one prong enters or the person is wearing thick clothing, it renders the taser ineffective.

With the cartridge removed, it is like a stun gun and works on pain compliance. It does not knock people out like on TV. In fact, people will jump away from it because of the pain.

Well Taser was not nearly as bad as I anticipated. Yeah its uncomfortable when your taking the ride but as soon as it quits there is zero pain, and even the ride isn't that bad. People describe the pain like getting hit with a bat, but mine was not that bad. I was hit in the left upper shoulder blade and just to the right of the spine about 1/2 in above my belt. It locked me up pretty good, and I lost all concept of time but as soon as the power quit I was completely functioning again. I will gladly get tased multiple times again before I get sprayed.

Good luck to you guys going through the process. If y'all have any other questions that you don't want to post public you are more than welcome to send me a PM.

And I will try and post my video if anyone is interested in seeing it.

Well... Finally took the test this morning. I passed the physical part with flying colors, and for that I'm pretty proud of myself. But unfortunately I failed the written test with a 59 (needed a 70 to pass). I'm really bummed obviously, the written test was really hard. We had 25 minutes to basically memorized a 6 page book and learn a bunch of statistics, as well as memorize 4 different people, their information and a bunch of other stuff. Than the actual test came and the questions were about the littlest details possible. I took it, failed, and went home pretty unhappy. Sigh, guess I'll try again later. In 6 months.

Sorry to hear that guerilla. That is not like any of the tests I have taken. I applied 5 times with 3 different departments, so dont give up on your first try.

It really does seem to be the norm, people applying to many different departments and constantly getting rejected! Sorry to hear that brother, i'm glad you haven't given up hope!

Thanks alot man I really appreciate your words. I'm having a hard time getting over it cause I really had my heart set on it, but it really was my first police hiring event ever. Everyone there told me to go easy on myself, as they were like 2-4 time repeaters. Fantastic group of people I was with, very supportive but it's a real shame some of us didn't make it and seemingly the majority did.

They all told me to apply to different dept's. Maybe I could but idk, like I said I had my heart set on my home town. I'll get over it. Just gotta be smarter next time.

There is no harm in applying other places, especially nearby as you can then transfer back to your hometown. I applied and got hires where I live currently, but I'm looking at trying to get back to were I'm from. But more than anything the experience helps. Like you said you will be better prepared next time.
I know its hard. I failed the physical on one of my tries, and I never should have failed. It happens, pick yourself up and move forward. Even after you pass the test there is still a long process to go through before you actually get hired. My first time I made it all the way to the end and was number 4 and the dept hired 3, talk about crushing. Just treat every try as a learning experience and you will get picked up eventually.
Also if several local or nearby depts know you have applied with the others it can work in your favor with one trying to snipe you from the rest, and push your application process through faster so they can get you first.
Mostly learn from it and don't give up.

I see you're in AZ, the border patrol is hiring you may want to look into those guys. Congrats on the physical aspect of it. I'm not trying to sound like an A-hole but it'll probably come across that way. Your degree doesn't mean a thing in law enforcement. In my experience those people that go into it thinking just because the job doesn't require a degree and they have one they'll be smarter and better at it than those without a degree, have the hardest time. I had several classmates with degrees that bragged about them every chance they could. Several of them had trouble in the academy and most left law enforcement after a couple of years. The ones that never mentioned in their degrees seem to be the ones that are still around in the job. When you do make it to the academy and start your career I'd suggest not being the guy whom brags about having a degree and saying that you plan on become a supervisor right away because you have a degree. You'll come across as a know it all or that you feel better than those officers without a degree even if it's not the case. But you can push away officers with experience that would be willing to give you advice by annoying them with your degree.

Is there a limit on how many times an applicant can take the written exam?
