I don't understand why some people think it would be ok with me (or SHOULD be ok with me) to allow anyone's flying toys on to my property without permission. That's just being disrespectful.

Steve says he asks for permission. He seems like a RESPONSIBLE 'copter owner. If there's someone nearby that wishes to cut across my land or look for deer, or whatever, and they ask first, I'd likely be ok with that. But why risk an expensive toy by trying to impose your will over mine when you didn't ask first? A lot could be accomplished by simple communication. It's not like I'd be out hunting for drones. I actually think they're pretty cool toys.

I already stated I don't really care what the law may say about your "right to fly" over my property. If it becomes inoperable after causing me issues, so be it. "Aw, look what mean ol' Mr. Gravity did..."

My point about neutralizing one is that I would know the difference if one was (what I perceived to be) scouting or buzzing my property and what I would consider an innocent type of fly-by. I likely would not disable a unit the first time it happened.

But if things continue and I feel like there's some suspicious activity, I have the right to protect myself and property, regardless of WHERE the real, or perceived, threat is. And that trumps your so-called "right to fly" over my property without permission. I didn't live to be this old by taking chances.

I think you're right. Back when I was flying remote controlled aircraft, we (myself and other pilots) would have never even considered the thought of flying over, or near, private property. We flew at the airfield and no where else. We even paid costly dues to keep and maintain the field. Why? Well, the planes were noisy and occasionally they would crash. We didn't want to hurt anyone or damage anyone's property, so we were polite and careful with them.

It seems like the guys who fly drones look at things differently. Since it isn't against the law, they automatically assume that it's cool to fly their drones anywhere and any time they wish. They need to realize that no one knows their intentions, so people will always assume the worst - just like the guy in the video. It's going to lead to more confrontations and then, more laws being passed.

I am quite familiar with a number of firearms; it's not from ignorance of what shotguns do, it's from not replying to you specifically.

Laws about low flying aircraft may or may not apply or serve as precedent. In the case of an aircraft, the vehicle is piloted by a person physically present in the vehicle. The aircraft is also (supposed to be) registered in most cases and it's use is regulated by an official US governmental body, the FAA.

Someone else posted a link about property rights. What that link implied is that you can build a house or hotel or tower as high as you want (unless local laws prohibit it). It had nothing to do with possessing air above your house or that aircraft trespass in any way.

There are laws for aircraft that pilots follow. Simply put, and person that shot a round of birdshot at a helicopter hovering 500 feet above your house would be in a world of hurt as far as prison time.

Drones are also currently regulated as aircraft, and it can be argued that currently most laws that protect manned aircraft also protect unmanned aircraft.

Right now, the FAA is working on laws regulating drones as the technology is new and wasn't really planned for. You can get licenses for commercial, though it's really on a temporary basis until the FAA does put in new regulations (hopefully within a year).

I don't shoot any video commercially at the moment, though I have looked into the possibility of applying for a permit. Since the laws are still not set, I'm ok waiting for them to finalize rules, then apply for a commercial license.

My major point here is that people need to chill a little on their perception of drones. It's a point that EXACTLY mirrors many peoples perceptions of gun laws.

Go after the people that do the stupid stuff. If they fly into the White House, prosecute them to the full extent of the law. If someone buys a gun and walks onto the White House, prosecute them to the full extent of the law. If you feel drones should be outlawed, then you also better feel that guns should be outlawed...otherwise you are a hypocrite.

Hypocrite might be too strong, although if anyone argued that owning a firearm is a right while owning a drone is not, I'd remind him or her that the bill of rights does not enumerate the rights of a US citizen.

Listen I got a great idea.. its a stoner idea but hear me out. Go buy a even bigger and faster drone with a camera and nice controller. Then weld a pellet gun on it and link it to the controller, sneak up on the drone and shoot and destroy the drone. Then land the drone and hide it, mission acomplished!
