Like I've said, we've reached a point in automotive design where every car looks like some other car.

And let's be honest, this isn't the first time. Even in the "good old days" all manufacturers followed the same basic formula for design.

you can only do so many things with vehicle before you start to have some repeat things. unless you're really outside the box, which isn't going to happen on an entry level vehicle.

I think the point is for once it would be nice to GM break some ground instead of copying everything else out there. When they do (Vette,Impala, etc) it's a homerun. I realize not every car can be unique but the Cruze and Malibu do not set themselves apart from other manufacturers one bit and I think that is a problem.

The Cruze's design is pulled from the 140S concept.

I still don't see how Malibu looks like any other car.

My point is that it can't look like any of those cars if it looks like all of them. Its a contradiction in logic. Car A cannot look like Car B & C & D & E & F & G when cars B, C, D, E, F, & G do not look like each other. It can't be had both ways. Either it looks like 1 of them, or it looks like none of them. It cannot look like all of them, because they are different. The most likely scenario, from simple statistics, is that it looks like none of them. Therefore, it IS unique and the design team did break new ground as they did not copy it from anyone. And if you want to say that they took bits and pieces from everyone, then the combination is still unique. Either way, its not stolen, copied, or ripped off.

Lets say 2 cars have a character line on the side of the body. Seems like to a lot of people in this thread, the mere existence of that feature on both cars would be justification to claim that one stole it from the other. But that doesn't mean they are the same. In general, you can have it go straight, or angle up, or angle down, or curve, or have a dip, or a peak, or a zig-zag. On the ones that change direction it can start early or late, be gradual or sharp. The entire line can be subtle or very pronounced, or transition from subtle to pronounced (or vice cersa). I'm sure I'm missing a few variations on character lines, but I think you get the point. And that is 1 singular feature. Each car has countless features, and the details of each feature differentiate even the most similar of cars.

And its funny you should mention the Corvette & Impala. Because they borrowed cues from other cars as well. Namely their 1960s predecessors. Do they look the same as the old ones? Absolutely not. But the new Cruze doesn't look the same as all those other cars people have mentioned either.

I think the Cruze is nice for what it is. Not to mention I hate leaving cars stock anyway so they're decent bases to start with. Also as long as they sell like crazy I'm all for it cause more profits for GM will ultimately lead to better big boy toys for us

You can't possibly be serious about that?

I'm as much of a Gm fanboy as anyone, but that car is a 200 twin.

Your list is about the same list as any Chevy/Pontiac comparison in the old days.

If there were no logos, and I was told one was the new Cruze, and one was bringing the Pontiac name back.... it would take close inspection to see that these come from different design houses.

I get it... people expect a car to look like a car (based on current trends). I care less that the car has a similar appearance to the Kia, and more about the fact that American cars lag behind other brands.

I drive a Sonata. 8 years, 150k miles. ZERO unplanned maintenance. A couple of years later, Chevy came out with a nice (and comparable) sedan. For more money, with fewer features, and less of a warranty.

At least my Sonata was made in America (unlike our Camaros).

I'm looking to replace my Hyundai in the next couple of years. I want good gas mileage, made on America, preferably by a company that is also HQ'ed in the US. This Cruze will be on my list to check out, but it has some serious competition.

They both have 4 doors and wheels. Wow they're so alike.

The body shape is exact and other than a little difference up front they are dopplegangers. If you don't see it that's fine, I'm not trying to troll. IMO they are ridiculously similar and that's not good.

Grille and front fascia structure completely different.

Body character lines vastly different.

C-pillar window design completely different.

Hood structure completely different.

LED lighting completely different.

The only similarities between the two is that they're both six-window midsize sedans.

Keep in mind, when someone WANTS to put something down they will claim some similarity with a similar product. I am a trained eye. I've done it for a living in this industry. They are similar in size and proportion, forced to be similar in both being mid-size and both need maximized aero. Beyond that? Not very much at all. Not very much.
