Its more than just AWD. Subarus have a crazyyyyy automotive cult following and legendary reliability. Subaru is here to stay no matter what.

As many others have said, we have a lot less weight to lug around than you guys. My car was just over 3,280 lbs on the scales, though the newer models are heavier. Another thing that people forget is the STi has extremely short gearing (3.90 final drive and very close trans gearing other than the 4-5 shift). It becomes more of a negative at higher speeds, but at lower speeds if you can shift and have the powerband to match, the AWD system paired with the short gearing is pretty deadly.

Again, I didn't suggest or even say "subaru is going away". But they're going to be taking a hit soon because other car makers are getting hip to their niche. Every maker with a hatchback is coming out with a hot hatch equiv. to the WRX/STI. Most other small SUV models, and even many sedans, are coming with an AWD option. The only place IMO Subaru competes (modded STIs excluded, which is not one of their better selling models) is with the Outback as a station wagon. Only Volvo (maybe VW?) has a comparable AWD model and when you add options the Volvo gets very expensive in a hurry. Not to say a loaded Outback is cheap, but the Volvo is outright expensive. Subaru is succeeding as the result of a few models (Outback, Forester, Impreza/XV), and the competition in those classes is getting tight.

If you look at reliability of all makers, very few are lemons. The gap between best and worse isn't that great. Most cars fall somewhere smack in the middle. The latest numbers put Subaru there with all the rest. Point again is that the things that made Subaru a known brand are no longer unique to Subaru.

Never say that! Remember Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Studebaker, Duesenberg?

I watched one two weeks ago at Rock Falls run 9.35 @ 139mph. If you didn't look close you would've walked by it in the pits thinking it was bone stock other than stickers, tint, and lowered...

My Cobalt SS sedan (2.0 liter turbo) was a tenth slower in ET but 7mph faster in the quarter than my Camaro. FWD killed the ET.

I have a good friend of mine with a Subaru BRZ with a supercharger. He's putting a little over 300hp to the tires. Weighing in at 1000lbs less than my ZL1, it's stouter than it looks. Handles great.
We took them to a road course for a track day session, both cars did better than expected. He couldn't hang with me, but it's not like I completely lost him either.

The LS series has been around for 23yrs. No need to change a proven platform.

oh, I wasn't bashing them using the same engine for so long. just saying how ahead of the curve they have been, that they are just now starting to get more competition with other 4bangers.

also, the LS engine has been upgraded a lot in those 23 years. the boxer engine the STi uses hasn't changed at all since 2004 (other than tweaking it for SAE standards)...so I guess it's just over 10 years.
