This is what you are supposed to do when someone comes up behind you moving faster than you are.

I seriously can't recall being tailgated and I don't like to follow too closely. I really like my space; however, I have been know to do all the following to people who mistakenly thought they owned the left lane.

1. Attempt to take the front fender off an S10 with my 2500HD on 40s because he felt he could hold more than a dozen cars hostage at 60 because someone was following him too close. He honked his horn and hit his high beams but I run dark tint on all my vehicles and I did not have time to wait for him.

2. Blow clouds of diesel on your car as I pass and I will pass you eventually.

3. Blow around you like you are stopped using whatever lane is available and if I have to cut you off to get back in that is your problem.

4. Once I do get around you, block you into a hole and let you see how it feels to have some prick act obnoxious.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I am really glad to see this thread today. I really need to find a way to not let tailgaters effect me. I have been having major stomach issues lately and I realized it started about the same time I got my new car. I was rear-ended almost a year ago and I now have damaged in my neck so I am constantly checking the idiots who are behind me. Plus now having a New Car for the first time since 1988!!! I am completely stressing myself out in traffic. I leave about 2 car lengths in front of me when stopping in traffic and I tap my breaks when someone is approaching from behind to alert them I am really stopped. Then If they get too close, I move up a little - if they move again I tap the breaks like 5 times before moving up a little again. 90% of the time they dont move up again. Honestly, sometimes it feels they are right up my ass but then I will put the car in reverse and my rear camera shows me that they are alot farther back than I thought.

I most likely do what our state Driving Instruction manual states, which is to increase following distance between me and the vehicle in front of me. If I can't move right to let them pass, then this is the safest thing to do.

I won't say I've never buried the brake pedal into the carpet. Doing that is less tempting than it used to be in my younger days...it only escalates the situation...sometimes it's just better to relax and get to where you're going, instead of being right and causing an accident!

If you haven't thought about a modulator for your rear brake lights, the idea might be right up your alley! The lights will automatically strobe on/off a few times before lighting up solid whenever you press the brake.

Those are illegal in many states, Florida is one of them.

I used to get aggravated. Now, I just pull over and let them go around. I tell myself that they've probably got a relative in the hospital and that's why they are in a hurry.

don't get me started on this 'bad drivers' thread. oh, TOO LATE.
lately its been people driving with headlights off in the dark - two just this evening. people trying to incite you to race them as their car belches smoke when they hit the gas. Yep, that's a real race car puking up various colors of noxious gases. Then the clowns that lay on the horn and insist you turn right on red regardless if traffic is coming OR if the sign says NO RIGHT ON RED. tailgaters? don't get that much. even on the interstate here it's more like 10 laps to go at Talledega except most of these folks can't drive well. Closest I get to a true tailgater is bozos that ride your ass at red lights. Usually I crank up the most bass heavy track I can find and let them enjoy the vibrations. No road rage. No brake checking. Get away from them either with power or a lane change. Too many asswipes in a big hurry to nowhere.

I used to get pissed off about it. I would brake check, slow down and not let them by and all that.... now I couldn't care less. I am, for the most part, a polite driver, I only use left lanes to pass, I drive the speed limit (give or take a few notches) if someone rides my ass in the right lane, I just don't pay attention to them.

I guess if you wanted to really teach them a lesson you could let them by and get their tag number then call in a possible drunk driver report....

Just dial the local sheriff ...
"Yes, It looks like he's drunk.. he's weaving all over the highway. And, I am not sure, not sure at all, but he had something in his hand that looked like it may have been a gun. Be careful and thank you"....
