So it will take a tune to unlock the potential of this car for repeated use thus voiding the drivetrain warranty. Not something that buyers want to hear I would guess. I am not a Corvette expert but does the ZR1 suffer from this as well, if not why did GM think there may be a problem with the Z06, was the engine and drivetrain not engineered as well? Maybe Chevy should have kept the Z06 N/A and continued with a supercharged ZR1 offering.
Maybe Medisin can chime in.

From the Corvette Z06 Owner's Manual (that thing many people ignore at their peril or potential confusion):
Quote:
Apparently, the "issue" was NOT excessive IATs, but was instead an ECU "safeguard". As not nearly every Z06 will be raced on a track of any description, it appears as though GM has inserted a "nanny" to ward off potential durability issues, as part of the car's 5-year/100,000-mile warranty. |

BTW, has this issue been raised with any of the 8-Speed Automatics, or is it a 7-Speed-only deal?

I'm not all that surprised. Corvette has a very slight hp advantage. Viper has at least 150 lbs advantage. I'll give up 10 hp to lose 150lbs.

My guess on the ZO6 is that GM found something in late durability testing and modified the tune to protect against whatever it was. If that's the case, it will be corrected as a running change as soon as a solution is found and tested. Just a guess. |

Getting HP via tuning and intake mods is easy, making the powertrain last is the hard part... If GM did this, do you want to be the first to risk your $90k car to find out? |

The ZL1 is a conservative tune so its not surprising to read initial reports that the Z06's timing table is also. Can it run a 20 minute track session? Time, not trolls will tell. ...and were does it say the ECU is designed to pull timing during break-in?

A couple of points:
1 - if this was a Z07 it had the track aero that adds big down force. Which means more drag. 2 - at these speeds, aero means far, far, far more than 150 pounds, give or take. 3 - from a very reliable source, GM puts a "timer" of about 3,000 miles on cars to enable a safer break in. A softer Powertrain calibration if you will. How many people on this site report their cars magically woke up after 3,000 miles? My SS Sedan sure seemed to. And I trust this source without question. 4 - just cuz they say it was two guys just having fun doesn't mean it was. These are two supercars, one of which is still American (thank the US government for that at least). Both at least built by Americans. And both expected to perform pretty close to each other. But I also remember the first Z51 vs. Viper comparisons and they picked the Corvette for overall chassis rather than just brute force. So my guess is on a track, all things being equal, there will be a noticeable difference between these two still awesome cars.
