IMO, Fiat has done something simply wonderful. I don't care what car they put it in or what it may or may not do for the VERY few that will ever run it down a sanctioned 1/4 mile or road course. They put an emissions compliant engine in the market that you or I can CHOOSE to buy that makes 707 HP.
And let's not forget the even bigger poke in the eye to Ford and GM. It's not the 707 number that's the poke.....................it's the $59,000 sticker price. That is the real WOW.
I've been thinking about that number recently.
I am not knocking the HC at all, as I want to trade-in the Roush Stage 3 for one in 2016. The thing that worries me is the cost. How can Dodge and SRT sell the HC for such a low price, with all the research and development money that went into the car? I am STRONGLY hoping that the car doesn't come back and bite us in the ass, with Dodge and SRT using inferior and cheap parts. I've been wondering about that lately. How does Dodge and SRT hope to make their money back with all that time and effort put into this monster?
Hopefully I am just over thinking it and the car is built like it should be.

I think where Dodge saved a lot of money is that the Hellcat motor is not a 100 percent from the ground up new motor. It has design elements from the old 6.1 and current 6.4 motors. The parts are new, but the designs are old. For example apparently the block is based off of the old 6.1 Hemi while the heads are based off of the 6.4.

I think perhaps the best analogy I can give is how the LSA is related in design to the ls3 and ls9

FWIW the 6.1 block is extremely strong. Arrington use it for their 392, 426 and 440 strokers

this coming from a guy who drives a car with gun slits for windows, more blind spots than the X15, a trunk opening that you need to angle a pair of shoes to get them inside, a interior that im not sure is retro themed or if GM actually found unused '68 Camaro interiors in a warehouse and decided to save money and use them and is also just as much of a 1 trick pony as its contemporaries(best at road racing , worst at drag racing). Sophisticated?

If your sole concern is that you can only drive the sales leader may I suggest one of the following: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Honda Civic, or the Hyundai Elantra. This way you can continue to brag about your status as the sales leader all the while looking like everyone else on the road.
What do economy car sales have to with performance oriented pony cars? The Camaro has paltry sales compared to the econoboxes you mention above, but it leads its class in sales year after year after year.

With dodge also using in their charger sounds like cost will be shared across a number of their vehicles decreasing cost on just one type of car.

We all buy the car that fits us best. The GT500 is a great car as I'm sure the Hellcat will be too. I could quote the magazines praising the refinement of the ZL1 all day and it wont change your mind one bit. That's fine. Just don't expect a white flag and "woe-is-me" from me for owning the Z.

A boob job can be bought. A nice butt and abs takes work

The Challenger is on model year number 7 for 2015. I'm sure the platform has paid for itself by now.

Dodge is obviously doing something right. You'll notice how the Challengers sales are still in 3rd, but man are they climbing.

As has been mentioned, Fiat felt they needed to make a statement with this car, much like Ford felt about a year ago with the GT500. Fiat is selling the car for what they think the market will bear. My guess is if they sell well, they will take the approach Nissan did with the GTR and push the price up significantly over a short period of time. As far as R&D money, I don't think this car required any more R&D than the ZL1 or the GT500. How hard is it to up the boost on the LSA or GT500 to achieve the same power level? Not very difficult, and there is even less engineering involved when you are working with a significantly stronger-and cheaper (but of course heavier) cast iron block as Fiat is. GM and Ford set the power levels where they did for a variety of reasons unrelated to R&D budget.

IMO the Challenger is already targeting a different market than the Mustang or Camaro, and it may well end up replacing the Viper and becoming even more expensive.

You hear the approaching Hellcat exhaust note.....undeniably Hellcat....

Your heart quickens.....hands tighten around your ZL1's steering wheel....

Your buddy in the passenger seat say's..."Kill dat fat ass pig!!!"

You see the 4 Halo's coming up fast.....fast as all Hell.....

Your mind whispers to you.."It cant be coming that fast ..the calculations don't add up.....don't worry....it's not real."

But your eyes....ohhh your lying eyes.....see the demon...about to have you for a snack.......

No road course in sight....you think..."What the F do I do now!!!!"

Your heart is racing like mad.....gonna come out of your chest....Hurts like hell

Sweat pours down your face....this is real...this is no road course pleasure day ....

This counts.....The pressures on.....Damn!!!...you think...Where is the RING!!!!

The Hell demon is now upon you...FUK!!.....It's F'in Hemi Dave!!!...

Red light....side by side now....no one around....clear road...no intersection ahead....

.....You think...$hit no!!.....Oh HELL NO!.....

...Your boy see's your fear....he hears the Hellcat exhaust.... roar...and roar....glass cracks....buildings shake...

....Your ass puckers just a bit... just as your boys puckers.....

Why did you eat that burrito!?!? ............

You now realize that calculations don't mean $hit......but it's too late

You know you have 3 choices now.......

......One..... Witness a probable straight line ZL1 death.....Your ZL1....

......Two....Ask Dave to head over to the RING....(which you already have pre-loaded in your GPS for such a situation)

......Three...Turn left and say you don't street race......
