I don't think commercial sales figure into CAFE, though I'm not positive on that. Maybe they still do for light vehicles (those under 8500 lb GVWR), in which case a 1/2 ton van would count towards CAFE while a HD wouldn't.

The other thing to factor in is the CV200 ... err ... CityExpress van for those that need something to haul bulky but light things & therefore don't need a huge van with a 1 ton payload capacity (let alone the 1.5 - 2 tons of the HD vans). As a side effect, they also get substantially better fuel economy.

As I think about it ... putting the two moves together & I suspect CAFE is playing an important role in dropping the 1/2 ton vans.

I read where the battery supplier for GM has released their "next generation" batteries with the increased range. This is awesome news!

I hope we see this battery in the next Volt. Imagine a 200 mile range in the volt, with the 3 cylinder gas backup that it will have, and if they can offer it at the same or cheaper price it would make for a very inticing hybrid option.

Volt was expensive and didn't have a lot of electric only range, but that is slowly changing for the better. A car isn't really our thing (my wife and I...I need a truck and she likes small SUVs) but I would totally consider a Volt if I was looking for a car around the mid size category.

2nd gen Volt is due next year as a 2016 model. Slightly upped EV range, smaller ICE generator, lower price. Plus they're supposed to be working on a full rear bench seat.

A 200 mile EV range for the Volt would kinda defeat the purpose of it being a hybrid in the first place. EVs need a long range because people might want to take on trips further than their normal commute now and then. In the Volt, you have the gas engine for that.
Plus, every kWh you add in batter capacity raises the cost of the car. And I don't think anybody has complained that the Volt is too cheap ...



What I would much rather see is a Volt with 2 different battery packs. A short 25 mile battery & one with a longer 50 mile range (or 30/60 or whatever). However it would work out, one is thousands cheaper than the other and is perfectly fine for people living & working in the city or just use it to scoot around town running errands. For those that want/need more they'd be able to get it while still having the range extender for actual long distance trips.
