Garage Door Open Spring Just Broke - Was Very Scared!
So I am sitting here just getting ready to go to bed, and I hear a crazy noise from the garage. WAY too loud to be good. I figured the damn ladder I have mounted on hooks just fell down and destroyed one side of my Camaro.
I go out, and the spring for the garage door (only 20 years old Unreal, just unreal.

That's why there is supposed to be a safety cable that runs through the spring to keep it contained if it breaks.

I've had that happen twice since I've lived in this house (seven years). Both times I was watching a movie or tv in the loft directly above the garage. It sounded like a freaking car came crashing through the garage and scared the shit out of me!

No line through spring, this was an old set up. Yes I have lights in the garage but I cannot really see everything, it's a black car (don't buy one
)Well you can bet I am upgrading next week big time, a screw drive, but if nothing happened to Christine, it was just 10 minutes of total panic and over.

Yes, glad no one was out there (we just had guests last weekend, it rained, we were all in the garage) so no injuries. I know, small issue but I was scared 1/2 my Camaro was wrecked.

Pictures tomorrow of the deal. Sorry to rant here on C5 but that was nuts.
I love this place.

That garage door is heavy and dangerous - keep closed until the repairs are done.

Man, I hear ya! Before I replaced my old style springs with a Torsion Spring set up, I had that happen a lot. Usually it would happen while I was away...I'd come home, hit the garage door remote, the door would only lift on ONE SIDE, then lock up. It's never good, but you definitely will want a Torsion Spring set up, much safer!

Had the same thing happen twice in the same house and the house was only 10 years old. What ever you do don't try and fix it yourself get a professional to fix it you could easily get hurt

Odd that you didn't have a cable. Those have been required for decades...more than 20 years for sure.
A failure like that happened in my father's house when I was a kid...50 years ago. After that we got a cable. Still, the loop end of the spring buried itself in the wall like a bullet...cable doesn't prevent that! |
