Ugh....people like that piss me off. Why does everyone always have to give an opinion, when it is totally uncalled for? I was sitting at a light one day in the Camaro, minding my own business, and this Prius pulled up next to me. I hear, "hey, its because of assholes like you that I need to drive a Prius." I looked at him and said, "oh, I thought that was your way of telling the public you're gay." Light changed, I took off and chuckled. That was just totally uncalled for. I guess Im just the type of person that really doesnt give a crap about what others say and do. Im not going to call someone out if they are doing something that I dont like, unless it directly involves me. I guess thats all thanks to the internet age, where everyone has an opinion, which bleeds into real life. SMH....

That lady is a complete ass. But if I were in my car sitting in a parking area with my windows down waiting on my wife to come out of a store or something like that. And a diesel truck parked by me and left it idling with the exhaust fumes coming straight into my car, I would be irritated also. But instead of going irate, I would just mumble to myself "what a stinking MOFO" and start the car up and move. No sense getting upset, because the next person to get on my nerves will be coming soon. They are everywhere.

but this statement is so blatantly WRONG and INCORRECT, it makes you look as foolish as you seem to think Prius owners are.


I have a Camry Hybrid that is 7 years old, has nearly 100K (wife's car) and we have never replaced the batteries.

My mother in law and brother in law both have 2005 Prius' and over 150K in miles on both and still on original batteries.

The truth is the batteries will last 10+ years and there are Prius' with north of 300K miles and over 12 years old (first gen came one in 1997) still running on their original batteries and they are over 90% efficient.

and the price of the batteries was $12k back in 2000, today they are about $1900 as quoted for our Camry within the past year, as we inquired before we hit 100K when the warranty on the batteries was up.

I don't claim to be a expert on the day to day issues like the battery, and yea the 12k was the last time I heard a figure on replacing the battery so sure I'm wrong there but I'd love for you to prove me wrong on the Total carbon foot print of a New Prius, and do you have any actual hard proof of that one of the first 1997 Prius is still running on the factory battery? also do you have any data on the 90% efficient comment?
any real world data of the batteries lasting 10 years? once again data would be nice.

we weren't discussing the camry hybrid.

the point I was making was that these cars clean at the driver's level yes but they make a huge impact from the construction of the original battery and or any replacements they might have. Once again I welcome you to prove me wrong.

I didn't comment on your other facts, the only comment I made was about your 2-3 year lifespan and the cost.. So I am not going to argue with you about it here.

The Camry Hybrid is the exact same electric setup and batteries as the Prius, the only difference in the driveline is the Camry has a larger gas motor.

granted they have an 8 year/100,000 warranty on the battery but that just covers the consumer if/when the battery fails and doesn't reduced the pollution created by a making a replacement battery. I still contend that a 10ish foot battery (or however long the fraking things are) more than makes up for the reduced carbon foot print of day to day ownership vs a non hybrid/electric.

Yes the battery is not that much in fact the labor will add to the cost;the cost of replacing a battery pack is a little less than the avearge engine rebuild on a similar-age high-mileage car.

I'll certainly commend them on keeping up that end of the bargin to reduce poluttion, now if they could just find a way to make a green v8 with 500 hp

of course the first generation Ni-MH batteries are worse than the current LiPloy batteries. Technology marches forward and gets better and better.

but read my signature, I don't believe that Hybrid technology is much more than a feel good for the environment factor for most people, however it is paving the way for alternative fuel options and moving the technology of vehicles in general forward.

no worries..

I wasn't really 100% on board with my wife when she wanted the Hybrid, but @ the time she was my Girl Friend and it was her money and her choice.

the vehicle has been good, she gets 40+ MPG in it on average, but it's because she only drives city streets, seldom ever gets on the freeway so she uses the vehicle as it was designed, for stop and go driving.

Hybrids are nothing more than a 4-banger at highway speeds, allowing them in HOV lanes is stupid, because they have no different environmental impact at 65 mpg than any other vehicle. They get better MPG and use more electric vs gas at speeds under 35 mph.

The only reason it was ever made law in CA was to appease some political idiot that bought one and thought he should be treated special back in 2005.

Electric cars in the HOV makes more sense to a point because they can run out of juice and block traffic.. But again, at lower speeds they can go further and at stopped speeds the battery isn't being used..

I work with a guy that has a Focus electric.. 80 mile highway range, but he says using the slow lane or taking surface streets he can push it to close to 100 miles between full charges..

Sitting at a red light = no power being used.. 65+ = full power being used.
