That might be a little bit of an overstatement
![]() How much is everyone paying for decent .308 ammo these days? I'm picking up a new R700 SPS tactical next week and I'm going to want to stretch her legs a bit. Still undecided on the scope....

LOL
Haven't bought ammo for mine yet, but Walmart (according to my nephew who works there) has .308 180 gr for ~$26/box. Everywhere else I have looked is more like $35-50/box. |

I haven't bought .308 ammo since I was a teenager. I have no idea what this stuff should be going for any more.

Think he's talking about how steel cased ammo tends to damage the barrel faster, at least in an AR.
http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/bras...el-cased-ammo/ At least in an AR, the cost savings from steel cased ammo can make up for having to replace the barrel more often.

For .223 where barrels are dirt cheap, yea I'll agree on the cost savings but on any other caliber, the cost savings on the cheap ammo doesn't make up for having to change the barrel 3 times more often than you would have normally. Especially in today's market with ammo prices as high as they are. |

In the case of the SS109 bullet (62gr steel core AKA penetrator) used in the M855 round, the copper jacket is thick enough to allow any distortion necessary.
It takes thousands of rounds to start negatively the accuracy of a barrel. MOST people will never have to replace a barrel - ever. Also, most people won't notice the accuracy degradation either because they don't shoot enough. Steel cased ammunition does have a slightly higher on gun parts it contacts but again, most people are never going to shoot enough for it to be a factor. The steel used in the casings is a softer steel than the BCG, barrel, etc is made of. Bottom line - shoot what you can afford and what you can get. On a slight segue - I realized I have went through 24# of powder in the last couple of months reloading ammunition. Let's see, 7000 grains in a lb equals 7000*24=168,000 grains. 168,000/24.5 (my intended charge) = 6857 rounds... I don't have that many, it isn't a perfect world. I am, however, slightly better prepared for the zombie apocalypse. |

Anyone know of a good place to get a leg holster for a baretta M9? I've been looking at Blackhawk stuff on opsgear and cheeperthandirt. Just wondering If there's anywhere else I should look.

I don't understand why a steel core penetrator would harm a barrel..... Never heard that story before. Any I've shot were encased in brass jacket just like a lead bullet.
Some say tracers can do damage but they don't light till they're past the barrel. Any brass jacket ammo is fine for me, but I don't use ANY full-lead bullets anymore.

It would cause harm (read: faster wear) IF the steel insert was in direct contact with the rifling of the barrel. Steel on steel VS copper on steel.
I've shot lots of tracers and never noticed any degradation. They are usually noticably cheaper than similar weight bullets and make great plinking rounds or make for a pretty show, especially after dark, if you know how to bumpfire. |
