I think its mostly the tire tech that has helped these older cars perform better that they have in the past. But still it goes to show how great older muscle cars are.

In a word, no. This simply shows how with modern tires they were good at one thing, going fast in a straight line. Factor in braking and handling, and they all lose to most of the entry level modern counterparts. Then factor in safety and amenities, lose lose lose.
That said, I would trade my '12 Boss for a '69 or '70 in a heartbeat!

While a car like an AAR 'Cuda is no match for a '12 ZL-1 on a road course, the 'Cuda is not an evil-handling vehicle that can only manage to go in a straight line. It is a complete myth that old cars cannot handle. The truth is that they cannot handle as well as new cars, and thus people say they 'sucked' at handling. A '70 Trans Am was noted for handling for example and while that is within its era it is worth saying that it was good enough to be noteworthy for its era. And don't forget that cars like a GT350 and a Z/28 were made to handle well enough to be competitive racing cars in their day.

Let's just say I remember when I took off the bias ply Polyglass tires on my 69 Z-28 and installed a set of the new fangled BF Goodrich radial T/A's
