I intentionally already picked up my "family car" in the form of a 1996 Subaru Legacy wagon. 5-speed with the nigh bulletproof EJ22.
Wagons > Minivans As far as advice, what makes a relationship work is both parties being humble enough to make the personal sacrifices necessary to keep the relationship going. Everyone has the capability, and once you get past thinking that you're the cat's meow, you can find yourself in a rather wonderful place. That said, when your significant other is not willing to budge and is making demands, that's not cool. That shows an inequality in the level of humility you two are willing to approach the relationship with, and that alone will kill it in the long run. Just my two cents.
