I looked at an altima coupe a while back.

I haev to say the current gen is pertty plain jane.

Interested in seeing the new one but.. I don't consider it a "threat."

so long as they use those rubber band CVT transmissions I'm not all that enthusiastic.

now the GTR... I'm listening..

I am not a CVT fan, at all and it is a sticking point for me buying a vehicle, but a coworker has an 09 Altima 4 cylinder with the CVT and it is actually quiet, smooth, and works how a CVT should I was very impressed.

What "rubber band CVT transmissions" are you talking about? The Xtronic CVT transmissions used by Nissan are manufactured with belts made of steel.

I'm not saying they aren't reliable, but I would never call them a 'class leader' like the OP said

Yeah right. I worked in automotive shops for five years. They have issues and they are the hardest to diagnose because stupid Nissan hides most of their diagnostic codes.

Its a POS

CVT has a lot of potential but from what I understand as built and programmed it works against the dirver for optimum economy and not optimum performance.

Further, I've read that they can't handle much power over stock.

AND.. I drove a few and didn't like it.

I've driven these from time to time when I fly into other airports. They are impressive IMO. Decent class, ergonomics, decent all around. Makes good use of the power it has (4cyl version).

We've had a Nissan product in our stable since 1992 (2 Pathfiders- 92 &02)and have got about 400k miles out of them with no major issues at all.
Thats why I stuck with them for the wive's new DD bought yesterday, just upgraded a little though.
Stay tuned for the upcoming thread for details

ONe of the few foreign car companies I like is Nissan. I guess I've liked them ever since I saw my first 300ZX (Z32) as a kid. Still think those cars look badass.

I've driven the Altima CVT and I had the chance to spend some time in the GM CVT several years ago that quietly came and went in some Saturn products (VUE and ION). Not a fan. Feel like you are driving a snowmobile. But if you don't like it, you can get the manual.

I think Nissan is going after style in this segment. That is what Hyundai taught everyone in this class, you can have a stylish car for the price point. If you recall, Toyota even delayed the latest Camry for a few tweaks. I am hoping that the Malibu can compete as it remains in my opinion, still a bit formal. That will sell of course, but it may not compete with people wanting a bit more flash for the money. If I recall correctly, the Maxima and Altima share the same platform so taking the Altima into the more stylish Maxima territory is likely a good move for them. Maybe a chance to pass Hyundai's Sonata?
