Hmm. It says UP TO $4500. Wonder what the criteria is to get the whole amount.

The money shot: Section 3 mandates a $4K voucher for “passenger automobile assembled in the United States with a minimum highway label fuel economy of 27 miles per gallon.” The same four grand goes to “passenger automobile assembled in North America with a minimum highway label fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon.” I guess our neighbors to the north and south must. Try. Harder. If the new “passenger automobile assembled in the United States” achieves that same [higher] 30 miles per gallon highway mpg standard, the US vehicle gets an extra grand: a $5K voucher. Oh, and if that “passenger automobile assembled in the United States” happens to be an electric or plug-in electric vehicle, the voucheree scores $7500. At the moment, the money would go to someone looking at a $100K+ Tesla Roadster or one of those NEV golf cart thingies. AND if the new “passenger automobile assembled in the United States” only achieves 24 mpg highway, don’t worry too much. The feds would like to present you with a $3K voucher. The bill also stipulates a lower minimum for trucks, ’cause we don’t want to leave out trucks, a domestic mainstay, do we? “Non-passenger” vehicles must achieve “only” 24 miles per gallon highway to qualify for that $5K voucher. [Look for some tall ass gearing if this passes.] |

This is a great idea. I bet this will get some people into some Camaros in the futre. Right now they are having no trouble selling them but in the future. This fall when all the excitement dies down? It will help. It can't hurt anything that for sure! Great idea IMOP! The car companies need all the help they can get. This can only help.

It helps Obama because buying a new vehicle, helps the UAW members keep their jobs which in turn helps Obama because the UAW supports Obama. So, actually Obama is helping himself.

they got to have a way to regulate this to keep people from buying cheap POS's just to get the money. something like proving that the vehicle you had has been registered by you for at least the last 5 years are something.

So then the SS would be out. Which is fine I guess but the 'Clunkers' would be destroyed. I don't like it. Another way to help the big guy and hurt the small business guy. I'm a free enterprise capitolist guy and I still don't like this. Let's just put the little guys out of work.

This I guess is the way they will determine the age of the vehicle. If it's too new you won't take the voucher but trade in. So then at that point it's deciding what is better, Trade in or Voucher. Either way you'll take what is best for you. So then it will be older vehicles where the warranties and extended warranties are all up. Then you just take a voucher and they crush the car and the guy who can't get a new car can't buy it and the local small mechanic can't work on it. |

So we are going to have folks who my own their "junker" out right and trade it on a new vehicle and that person most likely have to go into debt to take advantage of this.
Here we go again. Get folks getting deeper in debt. |

I don't know how the SS is out...I thought it had a combined rating of 22. If that's true and I have a 91 s10 for example which is rated at 16 combined, couldn't I trade it in and get the 4500 per the article I attached. For light duty trucks it just says they have to be new vehicles, not new trucks.

Irpq11, I think you are blowing this out of proportion here- automakers are selling something like 3 million vehicles less than they have averaged over the past few years- it is just a stimulus to try get the number back up and get people in the market for a new car....in other words people are still buying something around 2 million less cars than they did in years past if this goal was met. and....it's not like he's holding a gun to your head- you will make the decision that is right for you.

From the start
I've said this dozens of times. Want to stimulate the market? Instead of giving the BIG THREE any money at all, give it to us. Give each American a voucher to be used on domestic car purchases only. The BIG Three will get the money they need to be solvent and most Americans will have a nice shinny new car. WIN-WIN as far as I see it.
