personally, i didn't like the single action of the Glock 9mm i shot (can't remember the model) or that the slide was pretty hard to pull if your hands sweat like mine.

i have a Smith & Wesson i keep in my room. it's the sigma series 40cal, and it works fine for me. seems pretty accurate & reliable. it's the basic model series below the M&P and is cheaper. the trigger is a little heavy, though (around 11lb).

i've only got limited experience with handguns, so take it with a grain of salt, but this has been my experience so far

Is the .40 cal significantly better than the 9mm? or is it just a preference. Haven't handled either. The .40 cal will be a little more powerful i'm guessing. They both have same capacity magazines (15 rd) can't find any differences really.

I have a Glock 17, 19, 26 and 34. All in 9mm. They are great guns. Not one single misfire or jam in over 40,000 rounds combined. I love theses guns and would highly recommend them.

However, for a first home defense gun, a shotgun is a great option. Go buy a Mossberg Maverick 88 in 12 gauge with the 18 1/2 inch barrel. You can get it around $199 at Walmart or academy. The sound of a shot gun chambering a shell is an awesome "get the heck out of my house" deterrent.

Then buy a Glock 26 for CC. Get the comp-tac holster. Best in the business. I am wearing one now.

I will throw my 2 cents in there but take it for what it's worth.

I would not get too caught up the a .380, 9mm, .40, or .45 debate. The bottom line is that there is not enough data to prove any casing is better than the other in real world situations. There is not a magic one shot stop bullet. It's all about shot placement, wound tract, and permanent cavity. In fact one could argue that handgun calibers in general are not the "best" in defensive situations. Handguns are used because they are easy to carry and can be readily available on your person. If given the time to prepare, most would choose a long gun for self defense. The closest thing I can find as far as reliable ballistics testing comes from the feds. After some horrible results during a real fire fight, the feds realized that their standard issue handguns were not suitable for their needs. They defined some requirements, for example, the need to penetrate layered winter clothing, and from there they performed their tests. They decided that the 10mm had enough penetration through winter clothing and created a large enough permanent wound tract.

The point is, find something that is 100% reliable, something you can carry every day, something you can handle with ease, and something you can get back on target, quickly, for follow up shots....given your life style. What is suitable for one person is not necessarily suitable for everyone. I personally carry a KAHR PM40. It's reliable, easy to conceal (i carry in my front pocket), I can get back on target quickly and it meets my personal requirement of no manual safeties. My daughter carries a LCP 380 because she just can't get back on target quickly enough with my KAHR. That being said, If I had to choose a new CC today, I would go with a KAHR PM9 because 9mm ammo is cheaper which means it is more affordable to go to the range for practice.

The best advice I could give is, shoot as many guns as you can get your hands on....most ranges will let you rent different guns...then make a decision.

My wife was set on buying a glock. But after having both the glock and xd9 in her hands... She went with the xd9. It just fit better. Everyone I take shooting with me says the xd9 is their favorite! Great gun...easy to shoot…100% reliable.

As far as self defense weapon if you don't shoot at least monthly with more than one box of ammo and practice malfunction drills a person needs to stay away from a semi-auto especially a women due to the more frequency of limp wristing one .Get a revolver and be done with it,sure a semi-auto will work fine at the rage and you hear I've never had this gun malfunction, but the one time it counts and something goes wrong when you need it you have tunnel vision and you're in fight or flight mode game over.I shoot a glock ,a lot as in 1000+ rounds a month and it has malfunctioned more than once, not a big deal for me because working through a malfunction is an almost instant reaction for me.For you it might get you killed. If you need 12+ rounds to get it done in a normal self-defense situation you need to practice more.As far as caliber choice and CC,you can expand a 9mm but you can't shrink a 45.With all small caliber hand guns 380 and up if you have proper shot placement it will do the job.The reason you always see 357,45 and the larger calibers listed as one shot stoppers is because usually the more skilled shooter is the one behind the gun. Most non proficient shooters are gonna shy away from the larger harder recoiling weapons.

You can be gifted handguns in CA by Intra Familial Transfer. So either from mom or dad to you, or grandpa and grandma to you. That's it. This is the form you send to the DOJ with $19. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf
And this explains the legalities.

The nice thing is the magazines are interchangeable as long as the caliber is the same. I like that.

so in the past couple of days i was able to shoot the glock 19, beretta 92, and 1911 at the range. The glock jammed on me once (the shell was halfway ejected through the ejection port and then got stuck) but im pretty sure it was because I loaded the magazine that time edit: or I just saw how the glock responds to limp wrist shooting and maybe that was it... I got a brief familiarization and feel for each gun and definitely want to try others maybe a revolver perhaps even a rifle or shotgun. Glock was nice and simple. Beretta was nice, but felt bulky after holding the G19. The .45 1911 was...just....wow. It was a fun gun to shoot! .45 was quite a step up from the 9mm's

And I'm going to see if they have those XD's some of you have recommended and give those a try.
